Wow this is amazing. Is it pretty dark in the shed? I guess you need flash?

Is this the first time they’ve set up in your shed Padraig?

It was nothing fancy, Tiny. Camera on tripod, lens at about 250mm, Manual Exposure, F7.1 at 1/250sec (flash sync speed), on camera flash. I was peeping out from a makeshift hide and pressed the cable release when the bird landed. Ideally would have liked a two flash set up, but I only have the one. The tripod and hide were introduced slowly over a week so as not to disturb the birds too much. I took six exposures altogether. This was the best. I let them in peace for the rest of the season then.

    Michella,

This was taken last year. It was the first time they nested low enough for me to photograph without killing myself. The nest was only 7 feet from the ground. They raised one brood and left or moved to a higher location. I have about 6 pairs every year.

Great shot Padraig, but is there not high risk of disturbing the parents by using a flash.

Thanks again Dave. They didn’t seem to notice at all, but I didn’t want to risk it.

Lovely shot, swallows can get very used to activity there used to be an open shed where
I work and we had to rig up umbrellas because they used to crap on the fellas using the
machines underneath them, people, loud machines never bothered them they used to swoop
in and out all day long.

Funny you should say that, my brother in law works for roadstone and swallows nest in the concrete cutting shed amongst huge circular saws…..unreal!
