I came across this kestrel today in town, that had been harassed by a group of gulls protecting a chick. Only had my phone with me.

Nice opportunity to see such a wild bird up close! Those smashing talons give away her role in nature.

Damn, had the same happen to me several years ago. I was driving across the Curragh, talking to Barker’s on hands free about buying a printer when I saw a kestrel (also a female) perched on the fence on the Kildare side of the racetrack. I nearly pulled a hand brake turn to get off the road. I walked up quite close to her with no issues with no camera of any worth on me. I raced to the house & back but she was gone.

Was this taken on The Mall Miki?

She looks as if she’s been mugged! Well done on the capture!

    Thanks all.
John17. This was taken at the GPO on Kaiser street. She was a bit nervous when I first approached her & she flew a few feet into the doorway. I coaxed her back outside & wanted to check if she was injured. She flew another few feet & stopped again (landing on a windowsill). The gulls were going crazy again, so I went to where she was and the gulls moved away. She then appeared to be quiet calm and allowed me to touch her without pecking at me. After a few minutes she flew away. I reckon she was just exhausted trying to evade the gulls as she didn’t seem to have any obvious injuries. It was a great experience to get so close to a wild bird of prey & I was amazed at how calm she was when I was touching her. :D

Great shot Miki even if it was your phone. Can’t believe no one has picked up on the fact that it’s a female sparrowhawk though!

Well spotted Padraig. Didn’t notice that either.
