Hi all,
Went to my first reenactment this weekend! Not as nerdy as some would think, very impressed actually. Anyway, here are a small selection of shots from it.
Comments/Critique very welcome, i tried several things on these…
Drab Green Workhorses – The Willy’s Jeep and GMC Dodge truck.
A good kick up the Arsch – A German Private gets beasted by his superior.
March to war – German Wehrmacht march to battle. A young soldier carries the MG42 Machinegun.
Covering Fire – Two American G.I.’s give covering fire on advancing buddies.
Schneller! – A German SS Junior Squad Leader orders his troops to resume defensive positions.
Firefight – A Royal Ulster Rifles Gunner gives covering fire as a US soldier searches for a spare clip. Thanks for lookin :)
Richy…
steelydanParticipantThey look great Richy, where was that on??
Would love to see one of those.
Not nerdy at all, its History
richy5497MemberSpringhill, near Moneymore in County…erm Antrim/Londonderryish. The same crowd are appearing at several venues, actually i have around 400keepers from the event, makes really good photo’s, especially if you intend playing with your “old photo” techniques. If anyone wants dates for events, i’ll post em up…
steelydanParticipantjessthespringerParticipantNot as nerdy as some would think
Worse?
Some good action there Richard. I like the processing and the pose in the third.

GaryMcParticipantvividimagesMemberSome nice images m8, glad to see you enjoyed the day.
Will get around to posting some during the week, being lazy atm..
No doubt see you at some of the next events.
Garethslang61ParticipantSome really great shots there.
i would be interested in attending one of these.
would also like to know your PS technique for the 3rd pic – brilliant!!SeaviewParticipantVery nice set, PP is great in number three but I think number 4 would be my favourite with the casing in the air. I think number 4 would be a winner if you did some PP to it. I also would be interested in the event details.
Dave.
richy5497MemberHmmm, i feel a manly PI outing coming on…?
But manly women can therefore come too :)Yep, as Vividimages points out, the link will show you everything you need to know. If anyone is attending any of them, gimme a PM and we can meet up. I think there are several dates in Ireland:
9May – Lisburn Lord Mayors Show
16&17 May – Castle Archdale Irvinestown, nr Eniskillen
30&31 May – Duncannon (Wexford)
6June – Stormont castle D-Day (Belfast)
13June – Hillsborough Fort nr Lisburn
and so on…
Also 29-30 August – Salute, Dublin, this or wexford would be a good central location for a meetup. There are only a few Post Processed as yet, but i mean to get around to the others during the wetter days of our summer … (pleny of those then) :)
steelydanParticipantJust to add to the Duncannon June weekender
Got an email saying that the re-enactments are on from 12 noon to 6pm on Sat May 30th and Sun May 31st
Must stick that in the diary
Thanks for all the info Richy
GoosebankerParticipantJust looked at these now, great photo’s. The subject matter looks really interesting and unusual. As said before by others, the post processing in No. 3 is my favourite. Normally I like to think that Photoshop work should be done to make the final image as close to how you saw the scene at the time of capture but this is definitly one exception.
The desaturated look definitly enhances the pictures and gives them an “old” look. Sort of a Saving Private Ryan/Band of Brothers effect. I have a Vietnam book by Larry Burrows and the images all have a desaturated and grainy look similar to your 3rd photo. With this type of picture I think the subject matter and composition matters most, thats what makes the image – critical sharpness and noise that often gets picked up upon in other types of photography takes a back seat here. Real combat images were taken under haste and the duress of battle, shaky hands and higher ISO film and I think post processing to give this effect suits the subject well.
To my eyes the 1st picture looks too perfect and modern to suit the subject and could benefit from some artificial grain added in PS. Also the white van and peoples legs are a bit distracting.
Look forward to seeing something from your next outing.
richy5497MemberYeah, i settled on the post processing on the 3rd photo, i put unprocessed (apart from normal processing you’d do for any image) photo’s in the thread really for an idea of how they looked and if anyone wanted a technical comment. Also i posted them quite quickly after i came back, so i hadn’t really any time to edit out white vans :P
I feel that i wanted the photo’s to look Old, but not mono, this process gave me the right feeling and the mood i intended for the photo’s. I ended up processing the lot and they can be seen here:
