What gear to take on holiday
-
cathaldParticipant
Hi folks
I am heading on my first foreign holiday in a couple of weeks and was wondering what gear to take
It’s a 8 day cruise around the med stopping and different ports, and as this is my first time I dont
really know what camera gear to take with me.
It’s a family holiday so I dont want to take the whole kit but I also want to get a few decent shots
Would I get away with a camera and a couple of filters?Would I need to bring my tripod?
Any tips would be greatCathal
randomwayMemberWhat do you have?
(Tripod is not a good idea… after stopping to set up and take a picture a few times it could be used against you as a weapon by the missus.)

I was just going to bring the D200 and F80 film camera I wont bring the M/F as it is a hassle on holiday I’d say
A few filters and rolls of film and lots of cf cards,I am thinking along the lines of as small a bag as I can get away withNot Pete the blokeParticipantI would go digital only, and if you have zoom lenses like 24-70 and 70-200. Buy a couple of 8 or 16 GB CF cards. Instead of a tripod, think about something like the gorillapod – does a good job!
randomwayMemberTake the D200, a normal zoom lens, a fast wide lens and 8gig of cf cards, and enjoy the holiday! Concentrate on getting a tan and drinking enough beer instead of photography. You won’t need a tripod, other parts of Europe get natural light and you can actually use a camera handheld.

Cheers Ross I have a 17-70 and 70-300 so they should cover me
I have about 6 2gig cards and I have another 2 4 gig cards on the way from 7day shopmgstParticipantMick451ParticipantcathaldParticipantshutterbugParticipantPlenty of cards, charger, spare battery, I have 18-200 lens which is all I ever
bring on holiday….its perfect, I also bring a monster pod which is a sticky pod
that will stick to anything……yep anything and measures about 4″ diameter small
can clip onto your strap and is perfect if you want a bit of stability. Sun cream and
shorts of course! Have a great time :)gregorParticipantWell from my experience I would use from 4 to 8 gigs within 2 maybe 3 days that depends, but it’s me and my wife taking photos, and we shoot a lot, our solution is; we always bring 4 cards around 8gigs of space and upload them every evening to Vosonic VP5500 80GB Portable Media Player 5400, which you can get for about 160£ in warehouseexpress. The hard drive is pretty handy as it allows you to replace the drive inside in case you run out of space; you can also view all your photos and see if there is any issue before you wipe them out from your cards. If you will have access to PC you can also take another external drive and back it up there as well (those usb external drives are very light now and very cheap, wallet size). We’ve been using the vosonic drive for over a year now no issues at all, you can also get spare batteries, forgot to mention that it’s battery powered drive which takes most memeory cards, you can upload your photos in the field very handy.
When it comes to lenses
Cheers Ross I have a 17-70 and 70-300 so they should cover me
It should cover pretty much everything, I got one of those walk around lenses Tamron 18-250 it’s brilliant if you don’t want to carry much gear and be able to cover wide range, I always bring it with me when doing plenty of walking.
Have good time and enjoy your holidays.
