Canon 450D v 1000D

    Hi

I am currently upgrading from a compact to SLR, so as you can guess I am only a beginner. I want to purchase a new SLR but am undecided between the 450D or the 1000D. Do the differences from the 450D to the 1000D make the 450D the better purchase even though it is more expensive?

    Thanks,
    Fieconny

    Some detail here –

Only small & subtle differences between the 2 cameras.

As a beginner I’d say the 1000D is perfect.

I completely agree, I think the 1000D is the best allrounder for beginners that there is. Even though it’s the smaller sibling it still has Mirror-Lockup, Auto Exposure Bracketing, Adobe RGB, 7 Focus Points, RAW+Large Jpeg option and depth of field preview.

Many of these settings go completely over the head’s of beginners, but in a year or so as your photography advances you really see the benefits. It also comes with the full version of Canon’s RAW processing software, Digital Photo Professional (DPP) who’s latest version, 3.6, now allows for highlight recovery as well, meaning that if a bright area of your photo is too bright then you can darken just it and mostly leave the rest of the picture as is.

I can’t say anything about the 450 but I got the 1000D for christmas as my first DSLR and I have to say I have no complaints. Good luck with your purchase.

I don’t know where you’re based but Argos in the IIAC centre in Dublin have one 450D in stock for 514.95 euro. That’s a very good price, in fact it’s 35 euro cheaper than the 1000D with the same lens and can be reserved online.

    Dave.

Just checked and they have one in the Jervis street shop as well.

I believe Argos are qualifying dealers for the free Canon Training as well. There’s another of the free half days coming at the end of June. There’s more details here: http://www.iop.ie/canon

Our daughter is getting into more ‘serious’ photography. We had a look recently at both cameras, 450 and 1000.
She was able to ‘play’ with both, and get a feel for them — as well as the competition.
She felt that the 450 was the most comfortable for her to hold.

Both are good cameras; but I suggest you see if you can hold both of them to compare, then pick the one
that feels ‘right’ for you — either way, you won’t go wrong.

As Robert said try and hold them, when I was buying a DSLR I decided I wanted a Nikon and had ruled out Canon until I went into the shop and held both of them and the Canon just felt right.

Dave, thanks a million, earlier on friday I couldn’t find an available 450D in stock anywhere in Ireland. I looked on the canon training website and I can’t find out if they give the free training, (Argos isnt listed) and had decided on buying the 1000D for 449 with DID Electrical but Argos is great value for the 450D, if the camera is available with the training… Oh decisions!
