Portglenone at its best
-
andy mcinroyParticipant
I took my first visit to Portglenone today and I wasn’t disppointed. This must be the finest bluebell wood in the north of Ireland. Simply spectacular.
There wasn’t a cloud in the sky today so I tried to make use of the contrast to dapple the forest floor.
PeteTheBlokeMemberVery nice Andy. I was in a bluebell wood on Saturday – sans camera. It’s very pretty
too, Oxford Island Discovery Centre. Well worth a visit. It’s hard to pick a favourite from these three. Possibly no.2 because the paths
in 1 and 3 don’t add a lot to the overall images.MadeleineCalaidoWeberParticipantveeeeery beautiful andy….i still didn’t find the bluebell woods in south kerry :(
that you saved the blue sky…makes the image special!
Cheers
MadeleineSeaviewParticipantAedanCParticipantWhat I love about bluebell woods on a sunny day is the way the light comes through the trees in patches, lighting up small pools of bluebells. I’ve found it hard to capture but you have done it really well, particularly in no 1. Well done indeed.

BallymanParticipantFor me the second of these is the strongest of the three shots. I think bluebells are very difficult to photograph well at the best of times unfortunately but the slope adds something different to this particular shot than your typical tree, path, bluebell type of shot that every tom dick and harry has in his/her portfolio, me included :)

well, Andy don’t listen him :D #1 is the best!BMParticipantI’m with the Don on this one – I like 2 but the composition of the first is very strong.
aoluainParticipant#2 for me with a very close #1 for the silver.
The focus and main interest here is on the bluebells and I have to agree with
PTB I think the paths dont add much as I want to see more flowers! When the bluebells are gone then the path will play its part i think.
the exposure in #3 is too much, too bright.
andy mcinroyParticipantThanks everyone, as always it is great to get feedback on your preferences.
I tend to agree that the 3rd is the weakest. Perhaps it’s the shadow on the path or the brightness of the foreground as aoluin suggests. I was quite pleased with my efforts until I picked up a copy of AP magazine this week. There is a bluebell shot in there by David Clapp which is quite spectacular.
Mick451Participantandy mcinroyParticipantThanks Mick,
I haven’t tried the B+W yet, but heres a different version featuring a more distinct path. This time its been processed as an HDR which is not my forte I’m afraid but I decided to have a stab to try and bring out a bit more shadow detail. Any improvement over the 1st? I like the path in this one but I think the bluebells are stronger in the 1st.
petercoxMemberSecond for me (I like slopes in bluebell shots, for some reason =)) The first is pleasant, but the bluebells are not prominent enough to really sing. The second has great dappling and a strong graphic composition. The third fails for me because of the massive contrast in the foreground. With better lighting that one would challenge #2, I think.
Cheers,
Peterandy mcinroyParticipantThanks for the feedback Peter. I think I’m also tending towards the 2nd as my favorite.
and bump, bluebells need to fight back against these all these groynes
Mr.HParticipant#2 for me also Andy – beautiful dappled light, which has been well controlled here from a contrast point of view. Did you do much processing to reduce contrast here?
