Was out this morning looking for some wildlife.. the weather has been so nice lately and I am missing out of the sunsets and landscape shots.. said I would chance my arm with some wildlife… first time in a long time for me to see a kingfisher.. and he started hunting in front of my bag hide… I was really lucky to get these shots

    Yep, a Kingfisher for sure.

Lucky you, these guys aren’t easy to come by and to get photos like these, with the bird in flight, is even rarer.

    Nice one.

Well done Kevin, between your Kestrel shots and now these you’re doing very well at the moment. The first one isn’t a bad shot at all, you must have been some distance away. I think I only ever saw a Kingfisher once and that was just a quick glance as he flew up a river.

You’re lucky to even see one at all. I’ve only seen the electric blue flash past me once and once only. You’ve got a good streak going, make the most of it.

Yeah tell me about it .. I only ever saw a blue streak before myself… years ago …

This morning I was shooting some Mallard washing … and I saw the orange blue of his chest go by the ducks.. and wondered what that was … and when I looked away from the camera he was hovering in front of me … a few meters away… i was under a bag hide and I think that that is the only reason that I got the shots.. he hovered for a bit.. rested and flew off.. came back and I got some more shots… it was a great morning now alright so I wont complain .. getting up at 5:30 has its benefits after all it seems :D

    Fantastic to see these…

So difficult to photograph, be sure to add them to our Book of Birds…

Lovely. You did well to keep your head together and capture those in-flight shots. Might be worth putting a stick in the ground in that spot as a perch. My experience so far is like everyone elses, a brilliant blue streak doing 200mph, 2 feet above a river. Are these our most colourful birds?

Well done! I really like No. 1. You were really privileged to get these.

Lucky man. Nice pictures. As suggested you should go back to that spot and maybe set up a perch for the chap. I believe these guys usually use the same spots for hunting.

Will do that lad.. set up a perch for him the next time… and keep ye posted :D

Rob – or anyone really – How does one add this to the Book of Birds?

    Thanks

Just go to the “Book of Birds” section, there’s a sticky at the top with an alphabetical list of all the birds so far. Just click on the kingfisher name, reply to the thread in the usual manner embedding your images. Here’s a direct link to the Kingfisher thread if you prefer: https://www.photographyireland.net/viewtopic.php?t=10359

Just add it as a reply to the Kingfisher post in the PI’s Virtual Book of Birds of Ireland – Submissions

    https://www.photographyireland.net/viewforum.php?f=68

You should send these to The Irish Birding Site. They are always grateful for decent bird images.

    Very impressive, specially the bif.
    I’ve only ever once seen a kingfisher — quite recently — sitting at the neighbour’s pond, here in Switzerland;
    too far away to photograph.
