    Hi Hayley,

First of all you would probably have had more success with replies if you
had posted less images on the one post and posted them in the appropriate
    critique section.

That said (and I hope you didn’t mind me saying it) the images are here now
and I might as well comment.

Remember this is only my non expert opinion.

#1 looks like a nice image waiting to jump out but to my eye is a little dark.

I like #2 and wouldn’t it have been a cracker if he/she had looked in to your lens.
What is it they say “never work with animals or kids”

No expert on photographing plants but the light colour in #3 dosen’t look right.
Might be a white balance issue?

Well done on getting #4. Looks a nice composition to me with good DOF settings.
The lighting could have been better.

The shape of the fence in #5 is attractive to my eye but I find the horizontal wires
a bit distracting. Not much you could have done about that really.

These animals are probably difficult enough to photograph so well done on getting this.
A shallower DOF would have isolated them better from the background.

Hopefully you will get other replies.

Well done and good luck with your project.

    John.

Hayley’s portfolio she is submitting can be found here:

I’m taking the photo’s to be printed tomorrow for her, wish her luck :)

I’ll comment on the pics as well since i can’t get slapped in a forum.

    1. I like it and agree it should be lightened (i noticed you’ve done that already in the web gallery). I think the crop should be tighter and the wobble on the horison cropped out.

    2. The background needs fixing above the kittens head. I’m not gonna comment on the angles because i was there and between the whole family plus Oscar the dog we still couldn’t get him to sit still! Oh, and you’re right, Never work with kids and animals :P

    3. It’s a little warm but i really like it for some reason. I think it’s fine.

    4. It’s a bit dark, but i think i saw you’d fixed that as well, I like the image a lot as well. Pin sharp too and a great capture.

    5. I like it, but maybe a tighter crop in landscape format?

    6. I’d lose the last deer, it looks different! Hang on, i sound like a racist…How did that happen!

Nice collection, and the portfolio looks well, well worth the Diesel it took to capture them all :P

    Hi Hayley,

I hope the interview goes well for you. I think sometimes when a portfolio is asked for in an interview situation,
it can just be to show the lecturers that you are using your camera, and actually taking pictures.
Sometimes people apply for photography courses because they think it’s gonna be an easy ride (maybe it’s the new leisure studies  )
so, try not to get too hung up on it.

I like these pictures, I think they show good potential. I wouldn’t worry about the technical things that have been pointed out, you’ll
learn all about depth of field and exposure… Other things like cropping and getting the best from the light will come with experience.

I wouldn’t worry about the post processing either, you’ll learn about that too, and change your mind time and time again about what style of procesing you like.

I really like the kitten shot, I like the fact you can see how the animal moves, it’s form, and posture, like a tiger, but it’s just a litte kitty… Well done.

You’ll probably have to spend some time looking at other peoples work, and writing about why you like or dislike it, usually it will be about more than crops,
or processing, or sharpness… It might be more about how it makes you feel, what made you stop and look at it? Does it say something to you?

That’s the fun part, figuring out what you like…

    Good luck!

    Sinead

ps: having a dad to ferry you around to shoot all these things is pretty cool too, I’d be nice to him

Thanks. Went for interview today and they seemed quite impressed, they said normally people just come with holiday snapshots and my referances could get me into heaven. So just need to get GCSEs and im sorted. :D
