Hook Head with a storm – updated.

Alan RossiterParticipant
Hook Head. Probably the most photographed landmark in the South East of Ireland.
The image above – I was wondering how close I could get to see the wave breaker rise alongside the tower. There were several that came the same height as the lighthouse itself but I was cleaning spray from lenses at the time. Just after this shot was taken there was another wave coming in. I could see it’d be a biggie…I focused on the tower…then it hit. All I saw was a wall of white water bouncing back in my direction wetting and my A700 in the process. I didn’t take any more shots.
You can see the original image on my site.Alan
mgstParticipantbrownieParticipantBrilliant shot Alan…your a brave man and right to
go home after that experiance….lovely conversion
alright.Noel Browne.
nfl-fanParticipantExpresbroParticipantThat’s a spectacular image Alan. I don’t know the area, are you standing out on rocks taking the shot or is there some kind of viewing platform to shoot from.
Looks scarey either ways.

I’m on a surf board.
Just below the tower there’s an inlet that you see. Behind me the rocks go out and to my right for another 70-80 yards. Where I was placed is a lower ledge along by this bedrock. It was about 8ft above the water line but didn’t come up to this level. The wetting that I did get was one of those cumulation of 2 waves that hit the rock below me and spread upwards. It is safe…just wet. :(
I’ll have another go at the processing – since I put it up here I’ve seen a few processing flaws.
Alan
DeeboParticipantGreat shot Alan and nice processing.
Well worth getting the soaking for.
Dee5faytheParticipantHi Alan,
Top class.
I’d be very happy to have this in my collection.Has the advantage of being different than the more common
views of this scene.Well done.
John.
SeaviewParticipantA excellent shot and certainly worth getting wet for, I imagine you don’t get waves like that around the hook too often.
Dave.
rc53MemberPeteWMemberA really powerful shot, good contrast between the calm(ish) on the right hand side of the frame, and the mayhem that’s going on on the left !
Full marks for bravado in the face of getting the shot too !
randomwayMemberI think, you could have gone further to get the image. It seems to me, you werent’t close and low enough to shoot from the best angle. I pity people like you, fearing their lives and afraid of getting a bit wet…
Nah, only messing.
I love the wave clashing on the rocks, the detail in the rock face, the sea down below and the tower. Amazing timing, really great moment.
But I don’t like that rock on the left… it can be that it’s too small and just in the way as it is or that there is evidence of dodging/burning on the edge of it… I think, I would like to see a bit more of it on the bottom part, maybe even the sea and some more rocks in the foreground. The perspective distortion doesn’t look right either.. I assume you used an extreme wide angle lens, and made the tower vertical in the final image, but then the horizon is tilted.
You definitely have to try harder next time, you need more commitment, more patience ;)
aoluainParticipantjb7ParticipantVery good-
Alan, the next time you and your camera get thrown out of the house
for painting the kitchen red,
be sure to tell somebody where you’re going.Maybe the RNLI.
Glad you got wet-
let that be a lesson to you-Great shot-
though I find myself looking for more of the spray
(spray? wall of green water, more like)
to the left…Call me Mr. Picky…
And that wonky horizon-
I like it- adds to the sheer terror of the scene,
though that dark shadow on the rock might indicate a little bit of overwork…
maybe…RobMemberRubbish… the last shot I took at Hook Head…
This one, on the other hand, is bloody marvellous Alan.
Good man for enduring the soaking…
