Manfrotto 190XPROB v 055XPROB

Hi,
So i narrowed down my search at this stage to either of these two options. I think i’d like to save a bit and go with the 190 but I’m wondering about the height.
I understand it best not to have the center column extended too much as it reduces stability??? If so is the 190 actually tall enough. I’m around 5’7.Also anyone got any recommendations on where to buy from i’ve seen the 190 for around £84 and the 055 for about £109. Can i get them cheaper? I’m in Monaghan so buying online is my only real choice.
Thanks
Aaron
cathaldParticipantHi Aaron
I have the 190 and it is grand the height is ok and I am 6’1
The 055 is a better tripod and alot more solid so thats what I would go for
Remember you will have to factor in an extra £50 or £60 for a decent head also
CathalIOPParticipantI have both and I prefer the 550 for landscape photography but find it hard to get into my suitcase for flights. For travel I use the 190 as it’s a little lighter and I can get it to fit in quite a small suitcase,
Dave
paulParticipantI had the same issue, and ended up going for the 055. Much stronger and more sturdy. Seems to be more stable with a heavier weight on it. I find it brilliant.
It fits ok in my large suitcase for travel too, so I’m a happy man.
petercoxMemberAnother vote for the 055. Even if you can get the 190 up to a good height without extending the center column, the extra height of the 055 will be handy if you’re working on a slope.
Check out my article on choosing a tripod for more information.
Cheers,
PetersoleemanMemberThanks everyone,
I would love to get the 055 but i’m very close to getting the 190 due to its slightly smaller packed size and weight. – I’ll be doing a fair amount of traveling over the next 6 months on my way home to NZ.
Now i’ve just got to work out if getting the its worth just hauling around the 055 for 6 months and having a better tripod for the next 10 years or so, or do i go with the 190 and end up wanting the 055 once i’m back home…
ANother question. when it comes to heads other than a separate pan lock and being able to take more weight is the any other differences between the 486RC2 and the 488RC2 that I’m missing?
Thanks
AaronpetercoxMemberAaron –
For your needs, the 190 is probably the one to get for now, then get the 055 when you get home, and keep both – one for travel, one for when weight isn’t a problem. You’ve nailed the differences between the heads. I’d go with the 488 if I were you. The seperate pan lock is very handy if you ever like to do panorama stitching and the extra load-bearing capacity is very important when you have to flop the camera into the drop-notch to take a portrait oriented composition. The 486 will droop something fierce if using even a moderately heavy lens (such as a telephoto).
Cheers,
PeterPixelleMemberI have the 190XPRO and recently bought the 190CXPRO3. Not to confuse things, :) but there’s a lot to be said for a lighter tripod.
soleemanMemberThanks very much for the help.
I now have the 190xprob and 488rc2 on the way.
Cant wait to take them to scotland next weekend.
Cheers
AaronButtonParticipantSoleeman do you mind me asking where you bought from. I’m looking to buy the 190XPROB too. Peter I had already found your article and found it a great help, thank you.
soleemanMemberYeah no worries. I ordered from Amazon. Not the cheapest i could find but easiest to use with a New Zealand credit card. It was only a few pounds dearer than i’d seen somewhere else. – can’t remember which site it was now.
