First shot of a bird

    Hi All

This is the first shot I have ever tried to take of a bird so here goes. I was on the beach and this guy was messing around at the edge of the surf.

Excellent first bird shot Darren. Like the soft lighting. I’d like too see a bit more space around him though especially in front.

Love the subtle tones, a bit more space would improve this shot indeed, well taken

It looks sharp. It needs more space around and deffo more in front. It’s a bit underexposed.

    Thanks for all the replies….

I’ll have a go at re-doing it with more space in front and re-post the results. Yeah Joe it is a bit underexposed I’d say, it was getting dark and I took it with my Sigma 70-300 at full zoom which only went to f5.6 and with the relatively fast shutter needed it is a bit dark

Try cranking up the ISO. Have a look at my recent Red Kite and Buzard photos, many of which were shot at ISO 640 and 800 to get super fast shutter speeds in often poor light and rain.

That’s a great 1st bird shot, well done. As far as criticism, it’s pretty much been covered already by previous posters.

Thanks for all the replies, I did a quick job and more space in front is definetly more impressive. Next time I’ll up the ISO….

I started out with a sigma 70-300, great lens for the money
