Anyone here ever had to replace a sensor on there dslr cam
-
PaulocParticipant
Just scratched my nikon d80’s sensor trying to clean it with an arctic butterfly, have no idea how the hell it happened, there supposed to be the bees knees when it come to cleaning sensors! anyway I was just wondering if anyone here would know how much it will cost to replace.
isityourselfParticipantI’m not sure of the exact cost of a sensor but for a similar anecdotal story: after a boo boo cleaning my camera with some stuff I learned my lesson fast and stick now to a giotto blower – anything that needs something serious I drop in for a professional clean.
I hope it doesn’t cost you much to get repaired mate :(
MartinParticipantThe good news is that you didn’t scratch the sensor. There is a piece of glass sitting over the sensor which block IR light, you just need to get these peice of glass replaced. There is a few companies that will do this for you….
PaulocParticipantwell Nikon repair service centre won’t do it, matter of fact he eat my ear off when I told him what happened, any idea where to get this done? thanks for the replies guys
thedarkroomParticipantI haven’t actually tried it yet but I believe that if you use a Brillo Pad then you’ll never need to clean your sensor again. Guaranteed for life, only one application necessary.
PaulocParticipantI can’t believe it, not one of these repair centres can give me a price! apparently I have to send it in so they can have a look at it.:x
PaulocParticipantjust got a quote of £405 sterling from Fixation in London, that’s excluding the postage! Meath service centre won’t be much better I’d say. still works fine at 1.4 so I’ll use it for low light, and the scratch is in the upper edge of the sensor so I can crop if necessary. expensive mistake!! anyone know how much it costs for a professional clean?

£405 is a bit steep, actually, very steep considering Bermingham Cameras have an A-Stock model for €499 body only. Most camera shops would get the sensor cleaned for you for about €60 to €70 or it is quite possible that where you bought it might be offering the first cleaning for free when you buy a camera from them. I know Bermingham’s used to do it but I don’t know if they do anymore. I just checked their site and they do the first cleaning free on new stock, it doesn’t say about A-Stock.
You should check where you bought it and see if maybe they do the same offer. Failing that, allow €70ish a go.
Did you try this guy:-
SLR Service Centre
Rathmolyon
Co Meath

This address is from the Nikon website.PaulocParticipanttried him but he couldn’t give me a price over the phone, said he’d ring back with price later! I can’t believe that brush scratched my sensor I was so careful, don’t know how the hell it happened!!

Are you sure it’s a scratch and not just a smear? Did you blow with your mouth on the sensor when you were cleaning it and maybe you smeared a bit if spittle. While I’m not a familiar with the brush in question, it would need to be quite stiff to scratch a sensor. Maybe it didn’t. Maybe you were unfortunate to have caught a bit of grit on it and this is what did the damage.
How long do you have the camera, did you buy it new? Did you check out your supplier on the off chance that you might be eligible to get it cleaned for free? For the sake of a simple check, if it wasn’t actually a scratch but a smear as described above then you could save a lot of money.
rc53MemberThe Arctic Butterfly should be a very gentle thing, and it’s hard to see how you could have scratched the IR filter over the sensor.
I think that it’s more likely that the butterfly has dragged some oil out onto the filter, specially as the mark is at the edge, and this is what you are seeing. If I’m right, this can be removed by wet cleaning — either diy or professional.

I used a Giotto blower, I’m almost certain it’s a scratch but I will send it to be cleaned just in case, bought it new from warehouse express in the UK.
Just checked my warranty half way through writing the above sentence, it doesn’t run out till next month, will the warranty cover the scratched sensor??
PaulocParticipantjust rang them, warranty doesn’t cover the scratched sensor! gonna send it in to be serviced anyway.
randomwayMemberTake it to Conns or Berminghams and ask them to do a sensor cleaning before you would go to a repair centre… I vote for oil dragged in from the edge of the sensor, not a scratch… it looks the same and sticks as hell.
Good luck!

Only if the scratch was there from day one, I would suspect. The postage to send it to them for a check up or clean would probably cost you nearly as much as it would be to get it cleaned here. Call in to somewhere in town that has one of those inspection magnifiers for sensors and see from there,
