Beautiful Barcelona

markst33Participant
What a joy to watch. So much for the experts who predicted that Utd would be too strong for Barcelona. And at last there can be no more comparisons between Messi and Ronaldo.
:D
cathaldParticipantHere we go now all the ABUs creeping out of the woodwork
I have to admit the better team won on the night
I cant say barca were super it was just utd were crap
still 3 trophies in the bag this year
And I will be in Barca next week wearing my utd top with prideStand up for the champions, stand up for the………………
Cathal
MarkKeymasterWell Cathal, we do have to read about all the Utd wins ;)
Surely you’re not really counting the ‘world’ club championship in the 3 ??? :D
markst33ParticipantJust for the record, I am not an ABU. I like football played well regardless of who is playing it. But I think we get sucked into the hype that is generated by the media here and across the water.

Hi Cathal, I am an ABU, (and an AB anyone that is backed by huge money) and Utd were simply hammered – all matches are
“on the night” so how about just admitting that Utd LOST – no qualifications.
You have to admit you don’t accept any qualifications from anyone when you win.For once the peoples club beat the big profit operation. :D
Mr.HParticipantI’m not one to brag about wins, but am quite happy to stand up and be counted as a united fan after defeats… hurting today, but the sun is shining and I’m consoling myself with danish pastries and the prospect of actually getting out with my camera tonight.
Theres no point in discussion the if’s and but’s, just say the better side won.
I think Fergurson realised that we didn’t have the personel in midfield to stiffle them and play the counter attacking game, so decided to go for it instead. The gamble clearly didn’t pay off.
So Ken are Barca not a big money club? Your romanticism makes it sound like they are bray wanderers, and their megastars are playing for peanuts?

Hi Gary,
Barca are a co-operative run by it’s members – over a million of them. Of course they are a big money club, but their income is controlled by their members,
no major sponsorship is accepted (they wear the Unicef logo FOC), and all surplus funds (profits in business circles) are poughed back into the club.I guess the essence is that they are perceived at least to be controlled by large numbers of their members, and not by a few wealthy owners.
Their is also a cultural aspect – it is very much a Catalan side, and is seen as such by all of Catalonia – this is missing from the professional sport
the world over. The reason it works is because it is not romantic – it thrives on sound economic practices, democratic communal principals, and is truely owned by the people!
:D
cathaldParticipantIs that the same people who went on a rampage in there home town last night
God only knows what they would have done if they had lostAnd Ken you know we will all cheering for the toffees at the weekend(even if they are scoucers)
Mr.HParticipantSorry Ken … you lay the bait and I’m biting today  . Very unusual, I’m normally a fence sitter. I certainly have nothing against barca and am happy if we are to be beaten, that a team of such style does so.
Still don’t buy that it is any less ‘corporate’ than united. They still look pretty high up the rich list to me. Kind of ‘New Labour’ I guess.
I’m sure every united fan would be happy with the model rather than a family who could pull the money out at any stage… but that’s where we are and we have to live with it. Socialist or capitalist ideals wasn’t something I considered choosing my team back in the 70s.

Well, Utd disappeared after the first goal, and it seems Scholes was brought on so that on the night they could at least claim they made one tackle.
.And what a tackle it was! Later than a Mr Cowans realisation that over dependence on the property sector was maybe not a good thing.
Mick451ParticipantkenhParticipantMick451 wrote:“no major sponsorship is accepted”
They may have no sponsors logos on their shirts but they certainly have corporate sponsors – Estrella beer (yum yum) is the main one I think.I have an answer for that :) they have 6 secondary sponsors – Nike because somebody has to give you gear, Audi because VW has a huge
plant in Catalonia, and the other 3 (inc Estrella) are local companies. BUT I’m stuck on Telefonica, albeit a state owned company.
And they limit their level of sponsorship so that there is no major outside influence can be brought to bear.
I wish there were any english teams in this situation…Cheers

United lost for a couple of reasons…
(i) Because Barca have brilliant players
but Utd also have brilliant players.
(ii) Because Barca played as a team
Utd didn’t really….and i would blame the manager for this, not just a poor selection but also that the team was unsettled by Tevez issues, Berbatov never really fitting in, Ronaldo just not being a team player. Just like Barca got rid of Ronaldinho, fergie probably has a few decisions to make.
(iii) United just didn’t seem hungry, they actually didn’t seem to panicked about losing, compared to say Chelsea in the semifinal, or Chelsea in the final last year. See Ronaldo joking with Berlusconi after the game…. I think ManU has won too much, and the players, who by and large have no affiliation to the club, were just not hungry enough.
(iv) United still seem to be intimidated by the big names of Europe. They rolled over against Barca two nights ago. They rolled over against AC Milan in 2005 and 2007.
Whatever, United had players every bit as good as Barca’s, but they were well beaten.
