Hi there, I am thinking of investing in the near future in a 10-20mm lens for my D200. I was qondering what makes people out there have of this focal length and what their opinions are. Recommendations and reviews are very welcome. How much I should expect to pay. Do they come up 2nd hand very often. Price is important (unless I win the lotto tomorrow). Any models I should avoid ?

    Cheers.

Sigma 10-20mm gets good reviews, so I suggest you look into that. Goes very cheap too. I’ve the canon 10-22mm, the focal length is extremely wide and it distorts easily. It’ll take some time getting used to.

Tokina has a new 11-16mm which, if I was still using a DX camera, would be my choice. It’s getting great reviews so if your budget allows, I’d go with that.

I had the Nikon 12-24 which was plenty wide for my purposes and beat the other lenses available at the time, especially in the less obvious areas of flare and quality of the ‘starburst’ effect when including the sun.

Sigma 12-24mm if you plan to upgrade to FF. Plenty wide on DX, even wider on FX without vignetting. A 10mm on a cropped sensor is only 15-16mm.

These zooms have been discussed here a few times before,
a quick search should find the threads-

I’ve got the 10-20 and the 12-24 sigmas-
for dx, I’d use the 10-20.

I really haven’t had any problems with it-
    it does exhibit distortion,
as will any zoom, but it’s easily fixed when you need to.

Although I don’t make a point of including the sun in my pictures,
it performs much better in that regard than the 12-24,
    with zero flare.

I’ve just been out to do a test, good thing that wasn’t mentioned during winter,
or pretty much any week other than this…
but seriously, that was never a consideration for me.

At the wide end, a 2mm difference in focal length can be significant,
it’s 20% wider, if that’s what you need.

An often overlooked difference between lenses can be sample variation,
the fact that two identical lenses can perform differently,
with one sample being superior to the other-
    and my sample is flawless.

It might also appear for sale here next week,
so I’ll be keeping an eye on this sort of thing,
to get an idea of how much to ask for-

by the way, my copy is a 10-20mm,
regardless of the size of the sensor-

I have the Sigma 10-20, and I would never sell it until I am using a dx camera, it’s one of the lenses that I always carry with me, no matter what.
