Hi all
off to Paris for 3 days work in a few weeks, i will have 2 full evenings to explore with camera
Any tips, locations, advice very welcome and sample shots appreciatedCheers, Dee
kenhParticipantHi Dee, I hope the tips you get are an improvement on one I received when I announced that I was visiting Edinburgh –
“There’s a bloody great castle in the middle which should provide one or two opportunities.”
Just substitute the word tower for castle :D
Sorry I can’t be of more help!
Have a great trip!
Liam2673ParticipantYo Dee…
Firstly have you been to Paris before? For me, its one of the greatest cities in the world and i would think my favourite European city to visit.
I have never really gone there with a camera, but a couple of pointers would be:
(i) there’s is a high standard of architecture throughout the central part of the city, mostly dating from late 1800s as afar as i know.
(ii) the obvious landmarks are indeed obvious….eiffel tower, louvre pyramid, sacre coeur, arc de triomphe, opera, pont neuf, st michel fountain.
(iii) from the centre (say the louvre) you could take a metro to more or less any stop within three kilometres, get off the train and take some pretty nice photos.
(iv) in terms of places I would recommend
– I think Jardin de Luxembourg in the evening has a lovely atmosphere.
– Rue Oberkampf leading on to Rue du Vielle Temple right down through the bastille and onto/across the river is a nice walk with a good array of small french shops, good epiceries, delis etc. It gets progresssively wealthier as you get closer to the river. Good place to buy some stuff (if shops are open, which I think they would be) and to take photos.
– there is an interesting African street market around Barbes Rocheouart/ Chateau Rouge, not sure if it would be open in the evening….it might be. A different side of Paris.
-I’d say its a good place to take night time photos, black and white, of all the old style cafes and bistros.steelydanParticipantFor artists, people shots and a good view of Paris i would recommend Sacré-Coeur
There are a few places to visit here on this site
guthrijParticipantCheck out Monmartre but you will have to avoid the porno shops and the assorted pervs and weirdos. There are some great street opps.
Check out Oscar Wilde’ grave in Cimetière du Père Lachaise (6, rue du Repos, Paris 20e). There are some big hitters in this bone yard. Edith Piaf, Jim Morrison, Chopin, Maria Callas and Rossini.
Cheers, John
PhotoeyeMemberTour Montparnasse, Tallest building in France. You can go right up on the roof and you will see everything in Paris. When i was there the Eiffel tower was lit up with flashing lights i thinik its around 9pm.

This is a must and great for panos. Let me know what you think if you manage it.

DeeboParticipantThanks chaps this is a great starter and I will try and squeeze in as many sights as possible.
I fly in late on Sunday (after 9.30 PM) so I may try my hand at some night shots, but only taking a small table top gorilla pod type to balance on walls and cars
I then have monday and teusday evenings from around 6PM to get the shots.I am staying very close to the Opera house, so around 10 mins walk will take me to the river and down towards the Pyramid and gardens. I have also seen the st michel fountain and it looks impressive.
I have been on google maps street cam looking at the buildings and they look wonderful. Not sure my 18-55 kit lens will do them justice and thinking of hiring a lens but costs almost a 100 quid for a few days. Bit steep.
I have been only once to Paris and this was during the 98 world cup and the place was mayhem. We were more interested in Beer, women and football and in that order :-)
Got too expensive for us and we moved on to Amsterdam.any more tips welcome and thanks to you all
DeeDeeboParticipantThanks for all the comments.
Just back today from the 4 day trip. Had an excellent time and boy what a superb city. Got some good shots and got up each morning at 5.45 AM to ensure I got good light and people free images. Visited the lourve, sienne river banks, Champs E, Sacre Coer/ Monmartre, Opera House and several other locations
500 shots to wave thru so expect to see a lot of posts soon :-)
DeeisityourselfParticipantHi mate,
Sorry I didn’t see this post sooner. I lived in Paris for over four years so drop me a PM next time you’re visiting and I’ll point out some fine locations to visit. I spent pretty much every weekend of the last three years I was there in and around Paris shooting and could have done so for the rest of my life. Amazing city.
