Hi my name is Shana, 24 years old from Dublin. Just finished a photography course in Killester College and would love some advice in starting off in Gig Photography. Im so confussed as to how people start off in this line of photography because reading about it u need a press pass for everything. How do these people get the press pass to begin with??? I would really appreciate the advice.
MarkKeymasterWelcome to the site Shana !
You’re member #3000 :)
By the way, you should maybe post your question in the General Photography Q+A or Photography Business sections also.
Get more attention that way.Anyhow, welcome and get involved :)
5faytheParticipantHi Shana,
Welcome to Pi.
I hope you enjoy your interaction with the site and get all the
help you require.Do you have any friends or friends of friends who play in bands?
Maybe you could start off by getting some experience photograping
some gigs that people you know play. You mentioned attending college.
Most colleges that I have been involved with have budding and would be
bands in abundance.Check out the posters. Go ask if you can practice your art on the next big
thing who are just starting out . Like you in fact.Just go and do it and who knows maybe if you produce some good stuff the
band might buy it or you might have valuable images when they make it big. When you get the experience and a decent portfolio then you can worry about
the press pass.Good luck.
John.

You’re only a short distance from a few third level colleges and there would be plenty of opportunities there. You have DCU, Trinity and DIT all within easy reach and with plenty of spaces which could make useful backdrops. The fact that you could be photographing a college band might open up access to locations on site that you might not normally have access to. Things like college residents in Trinity’s old sector could be interesting, the possibility of science labs, sports facilities and so on. People can be quite accommodating if a student requests access to his course facilities for a location shoot if it is feasible. The worst than can happen is that someone says no and then you just move on.
College terms would be over now so a lot of the potential bands will have dispersed for the summer but get in early for the coming september and do your promotional literature to have ready. Don’t forget about these places having their freshers week, good for a browse to see who to approach for possible photo opportunities. Have your adds and promo card ready with your contact details and a sample of your work,David
By the way, WELCOME TO THE SITE!
