cathaldParticipant
Hey guys
Can anyone recommend a decent set of binoculars to me
whats best to look for is a set
I remember looking at a set on the mourne trip which were good but
cant remember who had them perhaps they were Steve’s
Anyhow there just for general use really not for birding or anything like that
I seen a nikon set in jessops with 50 quid off 8×40nfl-fanParticipantCathal… I can offer you absolutely no advice whatsoever on this… but I am interested in getting a decent budget pair of binoculars myself… so I’d be interested to hear how you get on.
John Griffin from PI had a set out on the Saltees recently… Lecia… mega €€€. I had a quick go and they were amazing… they seemed to intesify the light to make the picture crystal clear.
Let me know how it goes.

guthrijParticipantLieca Ultravid are out standing but as John says they don’t come cheap. Opticron are very good value. Look at Imagic BGA SE 8×42 or DBA Oasis 8×42 if you are feeling a little more flush.
Here is a link to a seller in the UK

Here’s a dumb question… but wot does the 8×25, 8×10 bit mean exactly?
200 and 80
guthrijParticipantIf you want to use binos for bird watching go for 8×40 or 8×42.
Cheers.
John
SeaviewParticipantThanks for the link John, that certainly cleared up a few things about binoculars.
Dave.
nfl-fanParticipantI’ve just inherited an old pair of Praktica 12×50 from nfl-da and having just given them a test they seem perfect for the cheap son of a b*tch that I am.
Aye.. link is handy.
bingbongbiddleyParticipantI reckon 12×50 would be about right for watching birds myself. I guess it’s down to opinion though.
I bought my Dad a pair of Nikon 12x50s for Christmas. I can’t remember the exact model name/number but they’re really good. I got them in the Dublin Camera Exchange for around 75 Euros.
The difference between 12×25 and 12×50 is quite a lot.
cathaldParticipantThese are the one’s I was looking at 50 quid off at the mo
Good link BTW JohnPeteTheBlokeMemberCathal, I bought 3 pairs before I got a pair I was happy with.
My advice would be to try them out, especially if you wear specs
(and I believe you do?).12×50 is likely not to be as bright as 8×42. A lot of people
find 12x is hard to hold still too.aoluainParticipantI have a pair of Bresser 10×50’s, used rarely.
Got them form ALDI or LIDL about 3 years ago, I think they are class, but I would’nt
have compared them to anything else.Had a look through them there without specs and they are impressive I have to say.
here are a few reviews . . . I think they were €15 or €20 something like that.
