Info on Saltees

shutterbugParticipant
I have had a look for info on getting to the Saltees, have found a lot of info
except what I am looking for……Declan Bates the name of the fella with the
boat, 10.30am the departure time, Kilmore Quay the place from which it departs,
can anyone tell me if you have to book a place or can you just turn up? Is it
like a bus service or will he only go with a full load? Alternatively his phone
number would be a help, I found a mobile number for him but I think there was
a digit missing 087-529736 couldnt get through. Is anyone else planning a trip
soon?SeaviewParticipantHi Jenny, having seen all the stunning pictures recently I would certainly be up for trip to the Saltees. Depending on the dates of course.
Dave.
shutterbugParticipantI know Dave pictures have been great, I especially want to see a Puffin, I would
imagine sooner rather than later would be a good time to go, dont know how long
the birds remain when all the breeding is over!SeaviewParticipantI’m a bit busy for the next couple of weekends as I’m training for the Comeragh Challenge on the 4 July 09, any weekend after that I’m available.
Dave.
steelydanParticipantPuffins were there last year till July 16th, was out there 2 weeks ago and there were plenty Puffins to be seen.
I would love to go again but weekend’s are a rarity for me, but i am on 3 days a week if anyone is up for a thurs or fri trip.
Either was if a date is picked I might be able to get a weekend off??
I can get Declan Bates Number this evening if you need it
flynnyParticipantHeading out there tomorrow, my first visit.
Declan Bates number is 087 2529736shutterbugParticipantSeaviewParticipantBest of luck for tomorrow Paul and don’t forget to post up the results. Jenny if you’re interseted, Saturday the 11 July 09 would suit me fine and wouldn’t be to late if Steelydan is correct.
Dave.
flynnyParticipantI rang Declan Bates on Friday night .
There didn’t seem to be any problem booking a place.
I’ll let ye know how things go and I’ll ask about how far ahead ye need to book.shutterbugParticipantDave 11th sounds good (weather permitting – not good on boats!)
Paul thanks that would be great, have a great time and look forward
to seeing the pics :)steelydanParticipantSome of our members went out to the Saltee’s today and only saw 6 puffins. They seem to be off the nest and the feeding was less frequent.
In saying that , they left at midday and came home at 5pm . so the right timing might be a factor here?
Someone said that they brood twice a year, that would make sense about seeing them in July last year ( second brood)
SeaviewParticipantflynnyParticipantJust back from Wexford,
Good day on the Saltees, loads of puffins.
Spoke to Declan Bates about booking ahead,
He said it’s always better to give him a ring before you go down.
He will go out when he has enough passengers, and likewise he won’t go if there aren’t any.shutterbugParticipantThanks for that Paul, glad you had a good day, look forward
to seeing your pictures :)steelydanParticipantSeems to be luck of the draw with the Puffins. 6 sighted on Saturday and Paul sen loads on Sunday.
Jenny, hopefully it will be beginners luck when you go out.
