Tokina 12-24 f4 or another UWA
-
KWBarbsParticipant
I currently have a sigma 17-70 that I use for any landscape work but was to be honest I think that I would be better ‘swapping’ this for 2.8 variant (Tamron/ siggy) for potrait work and getting an UWA.
I have an opportunity to get a 6 month old Tokina 12-24 f4, but without first hand experience of this I am not so sure. I have previously borrowed the Sigma 10-20 and loved it, but I have also read good things about the Tokina. The Tokina is probably much the same price (if not a little cheaper) than the equivalent Sigma 10-20.
What would you recommend (to stick on a 40d/400d) :?:
Should I get the Tokina or hold for a decent Siggy to come along?Any suggestions greatly received and I am having a bloody nightmare making up my mind!
Thanks.
Kieran.
SeaviewParticipantI don’t have any experience of the Tokina but I picked up the sigma 10 – 20 a few years back and I haven’t looked back. It’s a great landscape lens, I use it with the 400d.

MartinParticipantEither lens is great so which ever you pick you have made the correct choice…
I own the Tokina 12-24 and love it. Great build quality and great optics. If it broke or got lost in the morning I would buy it again
Ask your self do you really need the extra 2mm on the wide end? If yes get the sigma if no get the Tokina…. You have to decide
M
jb7Participantor you could ask yourself do you want to go 20% wider-
2mm sounds quite insignificant, and if you were worrying over the choice between a 398mm or a 400mm, it would be.PeteWMemberI’m sure there’s a lot of people in the same boat KW, I know I’m one.
I too have heard good reviews of both these lenses, and the people I know with a Sigma are very happy. My biggest concern on that lens is the reported variance in individual unit sharpness. You read lots of stories on the net of people taking them back once or twice before getting a “good copy”. Not sure if that’s just people being picky or what.
There’s a new Tamron (10-24) on the market now too to further complicate matters !!!
Would be interested to hear how your situation pans out
KWBarbsParticipantThanks for the replies.
I read a fair bit and I do not feel that I would miss the 2mm at all…. especially as I am using a 17mm at the moment. I’m reluctant to buy new and the 2nd market for the Sigma has gone through the roof. So I think that I will go for the Tokina based on feedback here and reviews. Now all I need is my camera to use it :( ….

Hi,
I’m writing this a bit late, but tokina is not the best lense for landscape photos. Be aware of high chromatic aberrations (lots of work in photoshop) and light reflexions or contrast losses. Tokina wide lenses suffer a lot from poor antireflex coatings. You may lose a lot of contrast from light sources in the scene or from reflected light. Must be careful when shooting.
It’s a pity because tokina lenses offer better resolution than sigmas.
I have sigma 10-20 and I’m happy with it. It was bought in Belfast for <300 pounds in December. Today prices are too high.
There is also tamron 10-24. It is cheaper but it’s not sharp at max apertures.
You can go for tokina if you can find it cheap, but remember about CA’s and poor anti reflex coating. You’ll just need sometimes to set the scene slightly diferrent. You will see it in the viewfinder.KWBarbsParticipantThanks for that last post.
As it turns out I did not get this anyway…. really pissed me off.
I had agreed a price with the seller on another forum, but someone came in after the deal was agreed and offered a bit more so I was gazumped!
BUT.. .the silver lining is that I didn’t actually buy, read your response and then be depressed :).
I’ll try for the siggy then.
