There’s usually a second smaller battery inside the camera that is used to maintain date/time info.
It sounds like yours might be flat… which shouldn’t really be the case given the 500D is a very new model and these batteries should last a good few years… which might suggest that it could be a bigger issue.
I try replacing the 2nd battery and see how this goes. I’m not sure where it is located on the 500D but it can be found on the 400D as follows –
“Remove the main battery, open the door and press the orange button. Battery no 2 is inside the front panel of this opening, denoted by afluted square to remove it.”
Canon EOS 500D – The date and time resets when I change battery. Any ideas?
Mark.
I think NFL-Fan is right, sounds like the internal battery has lost it’s charge. That should be covered under the warranty. I’d go back to the dealer and let them sort it out (including providing a free battery),
Thanks for the advice.
Where is the internal Date/Time battery in the 500D?
I looked in the battery compartment and I can’t find any mention of of it in the manual.
I could see it on the 400D but not on the 500D and I don’t want to go poking around.
Did a bit of research and it looks as if the battery compartment has been redesigned since the advent of the 450D and the secondary battery is now not a user replaceable part.
The camera is brand new and looks like it will have to go back to Warehouse Express for replacement
Other than this issue, it’s a superb DSLR – much less noisy at high ISO than the 400D.
