I was just wondering if any of you have been to Skellig rock? I know a lot of you have visited the Saltees and enjoyed it, but Skellig also has a large gannet population, puffins, rasorbills etc and I was interested if anyone had experienced a trip to both just to compare as to which was best? I realise that Skellig is a bit “touristish” which might not be a good thing.

There are two rocks, Skellig Mor and Skellig Beg. I believe the first is where the boat goes, the second is where the gannet population is but I don;t think there is access.

If going to Skellig Mor, be aware that the path to the summit is absolutely treacherous on a wet day.

I was talking to a friend of mine in the OPW last week and he said that they are considering closing it to the public because of a death of a tourist.
There seems to be a debate over keeping it pure versus modifying it for safety.

I find it hard to believe they would close it, but if they did I would be gutted I haven’t seen it yet.

Thanks Martin and Liam. Guess we will just have to wait & see what happens. It would be a great shame if they closed it.

If you go at the right time,it can be very quiet out there with regard to tourists, even on a bad weather day it is really worth a visit!
