With the best will in the world today’s weather
in Wexford did not inspire me to go out and
    photograph my surroundings.

I got to looking throug some existing stuff and came
    across these.

It brought back good memories of a few days spent
in the beautiful city of Barcelona.

I’d agree. The eye contact from the child in #3 really makes this a winner. If it was in colour, the colour might take away from this. Monochrome works great here John

Shots captured from eye level seldom work.. they always lack impact. This is because how people are used to viewing the world. I think the photographer has to add something to the image, be it changing perspective or using a different focal length. I think all 3 of these suffer from you taking these from eye level – they feel static.

Certainly 1 and 2 feel like grab shots. They’re quite busy and are just record shots of a parade. The first is quite busy and with no one real point of interest the eye wanders and never settles. Number 2 is hurt by the fact you can’t see the bottom of the stilts. Pulling back would have helped enormously as would using a much shallower DOF to throw the crowd on the other side out of focus.

Number 3 is well spotted and would be my pick of the bunch. But shooting from eye level again hurts it. I think had you come down to the kids eye level the shot would be much better. Conversion wise, it’s a little grey and muddy and could do with a boost in the blacks.

Many thanks to Angela, miki g and Dee for taking
    the time to comment.

Thanks Ciaran for for your in depth & very useful
    critique.
This was a parade on Las Ramblas in Barcelona in 2007.
I must admit that I put a lot more thought & maybe experience into
    each shot now.
This is in a large part due to listening to good advice when someone takes the
    time to offer it.

The differing attitudes of the kids was what caught my eye and thus tried
    to portray in #1.

The drummers on stilts in were making a tremendous noise & getting quite a reaction.
I was trying to shoot them, the crowds reaction and the speed of their hands.
They were moving along at quite a pace.
When I looked later, of course, the bottom of the legs were missing.

I was crouched a little for #3 when I spotted that I was spotted.

The shots were not grab shots but I know exactly what you mean when
you say they “feel like grab shots”.

I really appreciate you taking the time to view the images & write such
    a comprehensive critique.

    Cheers,

    John.
