Hi , Im starting Motorsport Photography. Does anyone have any tips? or what settings to use etc?
miki gParticipantHi Rallymad95. I haven’t done motorsport but I think you will need to use your widest aperture setting on the lens and you will need to pan with the cars as they pass. Also set your autofocus setting to AI servo so that the camera will continousily focus on the moving target. Find a good vantage point beforehand if possible to practice and ensure that it is a safe area to be in on the day of the event. That’s all the advice I can offer. Good luck with your venture.

Thanks miki g :D I forgot to metion tho , that my camera doesn’t have changable lenses! Its a Kodak Z1012. I know its not the best camera for motorsport but ill be upgrading to good gear if I get the hang of photography. :)
miki gParticipantTry it anyway. I don’t know the capabilities of this camera but the basic technique should still apply. I’ve seen great shots taken by non top of the range cameras, with just a good photographer behind it.

5faytheParticipantHi RallyMad95,
Welcome to the site and I hope you enjoy
being a member.Good luck with your shooting.
I had a look at the specs on your camera and with a bit of practice you
should be able to get some good shots.Focus may be your biggest issue.
You could try using manual focus and prefocussing on the
point you want in focus. It also has a burst mode which can take up to 3 shots
which might be worth checking out. Most of all take care.
I look forward to seeing some photos soon.
John.

Hi John,
Thanks for the welcome :)
I got the camera about 1 week and a half ago now and im still playing around with it. I tryed panning with manual mode but sometimes photos come out too dark.
Im doing my first event this Saturday so fingers crossed everything goes well :)

A photo from my first event!! :D
Also does anyone know the best settings for my Kodak Z1012 for motorsport?
I feel I might be able to get better photos!!
miki gParticipantHi Rallymad95. Not bad for a first attempt. The car is well composed and exposure is fine. The background is a bit distracting though and the image is a bit static. If you have photoshop, you could probably add blur to the picture to give a sense of movement, this would greatly improve it. The car appears to be turning towards you, and will be moving slower as it passes, maybe if you photographed them on a straight section of the course and panned the camera to follow the car, they would appear to go faster in your shots. Overall a good result though. Well done & keep it up.

Thanks miki g! :D What do you mean by a bit static? I dont have photoshop sadly, not sure how to use it properly. Aswelll How do you panning properly? everything I try and do it in manual mode the photo comes out too dark or bright.
Another image :
miki gParticipantstatic, like not moving. The car and background are both clear and sharp. This makes the car look still. Panning is when you get the car in the viewfinder as it approaches you and you follow the car and photograph it as it’s passing (not pausing) and follow through until it’s gone past. You could fire off a few shots from start to finish like this (if your camera will allow you to take multi shots).

Oh I get you know. Ya my camera can take 30 photos in a burst mode but only saves the last 3 I took! :( Also I dont know how to set it up as im new to photography
RallyMad95MemberHi lads,
I got a Canon 450D now and a 70-300mm lens. I have also learnt a bit about photography . Any tips now ? :D
Here Some of my bests shots so far with the camera:
Any feedback is welcome :)
miki gParticipant#1 and #3 are excellent. Well done. As the car in #2 isn’t creating a load of dust/smoke and coming towards you, it doesn’t appear to be moving, but other than that it’s a good shot. Great composition in them all. The watermark is off putting for me though as it is too visible.
Spicy-McHaggisMembersome nice pics there!
are u using AF or MF? i would think Manual Focus would be best but i might be wrong!
also play arround with the shutter speed a littlebit!
if u take a pic like nr3 or nr1 with something like a 3 or 5second shutter u would also get that moving effect in the picture!
something similar to this!
