My take on that much photographed tree in Carlow.

Would really welcome some C&C on this, thanks.

    nice subject…but its too busy!

the eye never leaves the foreground
    .
its over processed , both in the sky and in the flowers

for its worth, IMHO , i cant tell what the subject of the pic is if its the tree then, its lost in translation. the sky pulls your eye up from the tree, then the foreground pulls your eye way down. all in all , while looking, at the pic, you miss the tree !!!

I agree with the stig. If the tree wasn’t mentioned in the description, I wouldn’t really pay much heed to it. I think the flowers are distracting.

I’m quite a fan of that tree myself but I would not have recognised it except for the reference in the title. My eye sticks on the poppies so to me they are the central theme of the picture. Part of this is because there is no detail in the tree, it’s just black (at least on my laptop monitor, I’m away from home at the moment). Since it looks like an HDR picture perhaps you could re-process the exposures to bring out a bit more detail in it?

    Still a good picture though,

Real nice shot but touch over cooked for me. I would maybe reprocess and ensure that the blacks are not too dark, as the tree has lost all detail.
A square crop might also work to remove the cropped poppy on the left and quick clone of very small flower

Thanks very much guys (and girl) for your comments. I really appreciate the honesty of them, thats exactly what I’m looking for.

the stig: Great feedback, thanks. So its too busy? I wonder if I cloned out 1 or 2 of the Poppys in the foreground, do you think it would improve the shot? This is a shot that I didn’t actually spend too much time on PP on, I did darken the exposure in the sky to bring out the detail in the clouds and I used selective colour to darken the Barley from a very yellow to this kinda golden brown colour, and thats it as far as post production goes on this one.

mikki g: Thanks a lot for the feedback also. As I asked above should I clone out some of the flowers do you think or a crop as Dee suggested? I would like to improve this shot if possible rather than confine it to the scrap heap forever.

AedenC: Thanks man, great feedback as well. Its not your screen, the detail in the tree is a little lost I must admit. Its not a HDR though, its just 1 shot but I think I’ll start over with this one and re-process it based on the suggestions and critique here. I don’t want to lose the Poppys completely though, I think the red in the picture adds to the image but I take on board that they are more promenant than they should be and distracting.

Dee: Thank you for your great critique also. As i mentioned above, I’ll have a go at re-processing it and especially focus on saving the detail in the tree. I’ll try the square crop also as that would work too.

    Thank you.

For me there’s too much made here of the discrepancy between the title of the post and the content of the photo. I know when I’m posting what goes in the topic subject line is the least of my worries.

I agree with Dee about the square crop. Also, the tree does need to be a bit greener. Apart from that good sky, good subject (in my opinion).

Other than compositonal elements already mentioned, my main thought is that the toning is very, er, Harry Potterish. To this end, I think it works very well. I like the surreal or fantasy world element to it, it makes it different in my book. Taking that point of view, the composition then works better as it is a shot of atmosphere. I’d certainly keep this particualr version of the shot, well done.

Overall I think its quite an impressive interpertation of the scene. I think the style of processing really brings out the drama even if it is a little overcooked. I agree with the points above regarding composition but I like it overall.

Hi Mick. I actually like this shot a lot. I was just thrown by the title as I felt that the tree should have been more dominant than the poppys. I think the flowers add a great element of colour to the shot. If I was to change anything about the shot, it would be to clone out the small flower at the bottom and change the title. I don’t really think a crop is necessary. Nice one :D
