Im looking for a suitable camera for sports pics, all shops iv called to have a differant opnion,I think I could be down to Canon 40D which is expensive or NikonD60,I was quoated 547euro for latter today with box,battery,4G memory card and a nokia training day any input.I need to start making a decsion because im getting more confused.I have a Fuji Pix S5600 is it worth selling would I get much for it ?I would appreciate your advice.Cheers.
BallymanParticipantWhat kind of sports? What lenses do you have? It’s more the lenses you need than the camera to be honest. For fast moving sports then you will need a 70-200mm f2.8 at minimum so you can still use it on very dull days or under floodlights. If it’s table tennis you are into then you will need an 85mm f1.8 or 50mm f1.4. If it’s sailing then you will probably need a 400mm+
So it very much depends on what sport you are into.
For cameras, again this is dependent on budget. Most of the intro models can manage 3fps which can be plenty if it’s only for a hobby. The more advanced semi pro models, Canon 40/50D and Nikon D200/300 have 6-8fps which is a lot higher than the intro models but you will pay a lot more as well for these cameras. Of course then you have the pro spec models, Canon 1d series and the Nikon D2/3 series cameras. These offer 8-11fps and a range of other high spec options but you will be paying a couple of grand for these.
Come back again to us with more info and someone will be able to help you out more.
kanazawaParticipantIm starting from scratch all I have is a finepix S5600.I was looking to get a bit more serious .The sports I am looking at are field sports soccer, hurling and Roadracing(motorbikes).
BallymanParticipantWell there are numerous options depending on what your budget and expectations are.
If you want pics for a club website or something then a budget model dSLR and a 70-300mm lens will do the job grand. It wont work too well in low light but you will still get useable images with this gear. You can buy a budget dSLR for about €300 and a similar branded 70-300 will cost you about €250 but you can always get an OEM (Sigma/Tamron etc.) 70-300mm for about €150. You’re looking at approx €500 for this option.
If you’re looking for a more adaptable combination which will allow you to get low light stuff and a faster frame rate then you are looking at a serious increase in outlay. A Canon 40/50D will set you back between €600-€800 for a body only. The Nikon equivalent of the D200/300 will be similar. A similar branded 70-200mm f2.8 will add another €1100 to the mix. An OEM version of the 70-200mm will cost about €700. You can also add a 1.4x converter to this so you get a 98-280mm f4 lens. This gives you a little more distance which helps with GAA. You’re talking of an investment of approx €2K for this option.
Then if you’re looking for the complete pacakge then you can get the Canon 1D MkII/III or Nikon D2/3. You can pay anything from €1100 to €3000 for a camera alone. Add to this a 300mm f2.8 which is another €3,500 and you’re talking serious cash so unless you’re loaded then I presume this option isn’t for you.
I use a Canon 40D, 70-200mm f2.8 and a 120-300mm f2.8. If you are in the dublin area and want to meet up and have a play with them then let me know. I’m working over at the RDS at the horse show tomorrow so if you’re around then call over and you can use them there if you wish.
kanazawaParticipantThank you very much some gooc advice there. What is your opnion on the Nikon D60.
BallymanParticipantI’m sure it’s perfect. I use Canon so don’t know much about it. Maybe someone else can guide you with the Nikon gear but I would have no doubt that it is an excellent camera.
Piotr MMemberBut more important are lenses. Yoy can try nikkor 70-300VR. Never sigma or tamron 70-300, because their AF is very slow. For real sport photography fast lens and fast AF are needed. I think sigma 70-200/2.8 would be a better choice, but more expensive too.
And try too find good price for camera, because 547 i far too much for camera body. Is this whole set with a lens? I’ve seen in Berminghams d60 with 18-55VR for 549euro. I’d also consider going to UK.kanazawaParticipant547 includes lens not sure which one, hard case, nikon training day and bettery.
SheldonParticipantWe have this one on offer. Also includes the Nikon training day.
