Scanning B&W Film (Web Use)
-
damien.murphyParticipant
Hi,
Have started developing my own B&W film, and looking for some advice/ recommendations for a scanner..
I am in the process of setting up a darkroom which I will use for my printing, so only really need a scanner for scanning negatives, prints and contact sheets for web-use
From the recent scanning threads, the V500/V700/V750 would seem ideal, but unfortunately my budget won’t permit at the moment.
Ideally looking at a max budget €200/ €250, and a unit that can handle both 35mm & MF negatives,
Thanks in advance,
Damien
GizzoParticipantdamien.murphyParticipantGizzo, you’re right – didn’t realise these could be had for €250, but now see they can be
Before I decide on the V500, has anyone any experience with the above 2 scanners – the Epson 4490, and the Canon 8800 ?
Damien
GizzoParticipantmaybe I am wrong, but I think that when you have 200euro to invest in one of those 3 scanners you mentioned, there is no substantial difference between them.
(talking about the V500, the 4490 and 8800F)
they are basically the same.damien.murphyParticipantYou could be right Gizzo, my main concern is really re: the film holders and scanning speeds – if anyone has any feedback on these, it would be great, as the specs seem to be flimsy/ fuzzy in this regard
GizzoParticipantI have a V500 and the neg holder is not the best.
but I heard same opinions on the one from 8800.
I have a small lightbox and a loupe, so I can check the focus, in case I am not happy with the scan.
at the end of the day the print will be made under the enlarger ;)damien.murphyParticipantTrue :)
Can you give me an idea of the scan speed for 35mm negatives on the V500?
Damien
sevenjMemberhi damien, I got a 8800f last year, it’s fine for web stuff and comes bundled with silverfast software which has a dated gui but gives more control
over scanning options than the canon version. I found the neg holder a bit faffy so i tape to the platen.any other questions just ask.

ages.
really, it holds 12 frames, saving you the pain of changing negs.
but I wouldn’t call it ‘fast’, especially if you have a toy camera that creates a huge vignetting and the software does not recognize each frame.damien.murphyParticipantThanks for all the input guys,
Given the slow scanning, and relatively low’ish quality for 35mm scans, at the moment I’m considering potential ways I could use my dslr (D200) for the task of scanning. I’m not sure it’s a runner, but given the lower cost, higher speed, and that my negatives are b&w, it’s an option I shall explore before dropping money on a flatbed/ negative scanner,
Damien
