iPhoto Question

jessthespringerParticipant
I seem to be unable to import jpeg files to iphoto, if I try, I get a message to say the files can not be read.
Any thoughts on why this might be, anyone?Sinead
miki gParticipantHi Sinead. It sounds like Apples usual setup, ie Won’t play music files unless their format is used. Maybe you need to convert the file to whatever format they use. I could be wrong though.
jessthespringerParticipantYes, if I convert them to something else I can import them, but, that’s a bit of a pain. Surely they must recognize jpeg?

iphoto supports jpgsthis is more than likely the bug with a certain version of iphoto and quicktime, where if the images dont have colour profiles iphoto wont import them
AlessiaParticipantI’ve used IPhoto since a month ago when I started to use Lightroom instead. I was bored about some other problems with IPhoto but it supported jpeg format….

Right, but, I’m sure my pictures have the profile embedded… I can’t update iPhoto, unless I buy iLife, or that’s the message I’m getting anyway.
Alessia, I use LightRoom too, and I love it, but, I just wanted somewhere where I can store pictures after processing, iPhoto would be the easiest place, but instead I have folders all over the place,
I can never the flip remember where I put things, and have multiple copies of things I don’t need, here, there and everywhere! (prepare for future questions on good hard drive house keeping)
Oh, it’s all such a mess…Sorry, I am emotional, I’ve been in front of the computer for two days and nights and am ready to pull out all my hair while simultaneously jumping out the window. :!:
What can’t things just be simple?
the stigMembersinead,
What version of iphoto are you using, and what version of mac osx have you?Try this:
DRAG the jpeg onto the iPhoto icon and it should convert ( if needed ) and import correctly.iPhoto will NOT IMPORT to a folder ! ( as in dragging onto the folder within iPhoto.
you may have to re-build the iPhoto database and renew permissions
Heres how you do this:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2638AlessiaParticipantit’s funny because I stopped to use IPhoto for the same reason you would use it… for me it’s not so good for storing pictures and I think lightroom is better…. but I’m very far to have a real good organization in storing my pics…. :) maybe someone more expert could enlight us….
cheers (and cuddles to Jess)GizzoParticipantiPhoto is devil handcraft.
what about Adobe Bridge or something like that?MartinParticipantjessthespringer wrote:

If you do plan on pulling out all your hair while simultaneously jumping out the window please put the camera on a timer and take a picture, id say it would be funny, and can I have your dog if you don’t survive the fall…

They are its just people make things complicated…
I don’t use any of these flashy programs to store my pictures….. KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid is something I have learnt from working in programming for 14 years as doing things in a complicated way always come back and bite you on the ar-se at some stage… I just create directories/folders with the date and a short description of what shots were taken on that day for example
20090204_Walking in the Mourne mountains
20090208_On Holidays in France
etc etcI use Adobe bridge to then browse the pics in these folders……
Thats my way, very simple and easy, i then mirror these directories onto external harddrives for backup…
M
GizzoParticipantoh since Martin said his technique, I’ll follow.
I have folders for each camera, then, for digital I have folders for each month like
30D/01 september 2008
30D/02 october 2008so on and so forth.
for the negatives I have numbers that will reflect the physical storage.and I rely on Time Machine for backups on one HD and another one just for the documents directory…
miki gParticipantUsing tags is another helpful way of staying organised, ie Nature, Street, People etc. It’s a lot esier to find pictures later as well as using folders and subfolders.
jessthespringerParticipantCheers, the stig, I’ll give that a go this evening, see if it works. It’s iPhoto 2008
Dragging pictures doesn’t work either.Alessia – I import most of my pictures into LR (also a mess) I’d just like somewhere where I can store jpegs,
for web use and that kind of thing… (jess says thanks for the cuddles)Gigi – I really dislike adobe bridge, not really sure why, but it just doesn’t float my boat at all.
Martin – I live in a bungalow, no damage done, although a trip to the salon might be in order!
no, you can’t have the dog! sheese! And, yes, it has been said before, I am a complicated woman, but iPhoto seems the least complicated way
for me, if I could only get the pictures in there!miki – gigi – I do these things too, it’s the storing of the edits that I’d like to get sorted.
GizzoParticipantI do these things too, it’s the storing of the edits that I’d like to get sorted
oh, well. there is flickr for that :D
I find pointless to save them. pretty sure that when I’ll print them, I will notice some differences and I will re-edit them again.suspectmonkeyMemberI have iPhoto ’08, but after a quick look around I decided I was much better sticking with Lightroom. The “problem” with LR is having a good folder structure on your HD. If you don’t, it will be a mess. The other problem is that if you move, rename or delete a folder or image file on your HD you will end up with a broken link in LR. Recently I did a complete overhaul of my folder structure and whilst it was a tedious and boring process it now works really well and should continue to work well for the foreseable future.
All my photos are stored under the Pictures folder. I then have a folder “Photos by Date”. Within that I have folders broken up by year. And then within that I have folders for each shoot sorted by date (similar to Martin), for example “200908 Lurgan Park Rally” is my most recent folder. Within this are all my image files. When I have fresh photos from a shoot I connect the camera via. USB and use Image Capture to import them into my folder structure. I then open LR and use Import to display the new folder within my LR library. When I restructured my folders I removed everything from LR and then re-imported my entire Pictures folder, beware though because obviously you will lose any LR ammendments that you havent backed up or exported.
If I understand your reasoning for wanting to use iPhoto however, I did have a similar problem. Where do I file my final edits, and where do I file other images like avatars, wallpapers, low res web images etc? So within my Pictures folder I created a new folder called “Other Photos”. Inside this folder I placed several folders such as “High Res Final Edits”, “Low Res Web Images”, “Wallpapers” etc. When I’ve finished editing a photo from within LR I just click Export and then select my “High Res Final Edits” folder to export it to. This keeps everything nicely structured on my HD, and also perfectly syncronized with LR. Like I said it can be painstaking to do at the start but its easier to do it now before you have a few more thousand images to deal with, and once its done then thats it :)
One final note, and I think someone else mentioned this. I’ve started using Tags in LR now, and its great. When I import the photos from a particular shoot I tag them, usually by genre and/or location. So say I took some photos in the Mournes, I would tag them Mournes along with all the other photos Ive taken over the years from the Mournes. With one click in LR I can then filter out every image I’ve ever taken in the Mournes. You could do exactly the same for your Final Edits, just tag the images et voila.
Hope this makes sense, I know its pretty long winded and I’m probably not telling you anything you don’t already know but for me all these features mean that any other software such as iPhoto is completely redundant on my Mac :)
