I’m looking at buying my first dslr. would you recomend something older like a canon 30d for example instrad of a 450 or 500d. also some of the uk internet based companies seem to have pretty good prices, but are there any horror stories regarding after sales service. is the guarantee you get with a canon or nikon mean you can bring it into any authorised dealer for repair once it’s under wattanty? thanks.
steelydanParticipantYou can get some great deals on older Canon Models like the 20D , 30D and now even the 40D
basically they are very similar, what I mean by that is the controls are basically the same in all models(maybe one or two buttons swapped around.added etc)
The major difference are the Megapixels, metering,
Heres a good comparison between the 3 i mentioned
A good way of learning about your camera is to join a Camera Club. And judging by your name, Waterford Camera Club start back with their meetings next Monday 24 Aug at 730 pm for beginners. PM me for more info ,if you need it

b318ispParticipantIf you can live with the increased size and weight and less up-to-date features, an older body will serve you well. Any time you step into secondhand gear you are effectively on your own though. A bit of howework, a few keen questions and patience will mitigate this.
One thing I’d personally recommend, is to buy within Ireland so you can sight the item before handing over cash.
waterford45MemberThanks for advice. Can’t make the meetings steelydan as I emigrated to Co. Louthsome years ago and wife gets cold feet south of Grafton St!!
miki gParticipantIf you get a camera at a good price, you can get your wife some nice warm slippers from the savings.
CooksterParticipantSecond hand there seems to be a lot more Canon than Nikon for sale, much to my dismay. If the camera is decent the seller shouldn’t object to giving you a reciept. Most cameras have some negative features, if the seller is on the up-and -up they should be willing to tell you the cameras faults (though this does show your own lack of knowledge of what you are getting into-it works for me)
It helps to have someone who knows camera’s check it out, if you are not familiar with operating a digital camera. There are loads of websites with tips for buying 2ndhand and for reviewing camera features. http://WWW.Kenrockwell.com was great for me.
You will get an older camera much cheaper, and I don’t think the features have improved drastically in the last few years.
I was lead to believe once you go over 4 Megapixels it doesn’t make a big difference unless you are making bus shelter posters, I could be wrong???The better the quality lens is the most important thing.
Best of luck

b318isp is right about buying in ireland, and try before you buy, even from a shop.
randomwayMemberBuy something from here in the B&S section or from adverts.ie, you won’t be disappointed. Those very cheap online shops are all scammers, make a search for their name on google or here on the site for more info. Good luck!
markst33ParticipantI recently bought a 2nd hand Nikon D200. I already had a nikon D50 so I was staying with a Nikon because I had lenses. My budget then pointed me inn the direction of a D200. I did a fair bit of research and posted questions on different photography forums asking for peoples opinions on the camera and what they found to be its best and worst qualities. Then a pro from England saw my posting on http://www.ephotozine.com and told me he had a D200 body for sale. So after haggling a bit on the price we did the deal via paypal and I have been extremely happy.
My point is once you have come down to a choice out of 2-3 cameras, which will be determined by a bit of research and budget hit all the forums you can and get peoples opinions and you never know, you may get an offer. If not you are well armed with knowledge to make your final decision.
