Went on a 2 night break to Westport with the family last week. Had very little time for photography
but managed to sneak out for sunrise (which just didnt happen… Grrrrrr) one morning…. Here’s a
few… not sure on Black and white or colour versions……
All 5D2, Lee filters and various lens. Very surprised I haven’t seen more from over there… very beautiful
landscape with plenty of stunning locations.Richie
b318ispParticipantLovely shots – I see what you mean about trying to decide between b&w and colour. I can’t decide either!
dar_dParticipantDakyParticipantI like them too – but unlike dar_d I prefer the colour version of the boats.
I like the B&W version of the first shot.
niallmacParticipantI love that first one. for me the b+w is better in that one.
i think the boats work better in colour.shutterbugParticipantVery nice, I think the church steeple in the trees would look stunning in the
autumn just as the leaves are turning. I like the first B&W and Colour for
the boat, they are all beautifully sharp.miki gParticipantFirst shot is beautiful. Definitely B&W for that one. Colour works best with the boat IMO. Lovely set.
lousyParticipantHard to decide Richie, but they are lovely shots. I particularly like #2
Excellent,Pat
sevenjMemberI prefer the monochrome versions. for me they seem to emphasise the textures and are easier on the eye than the colour versions.
Composition looks good too. JohnBrickerParticipantFor me, the B&W 2 stand out….. good work. I was there earlier in the year and had a similar sunrise non-event…. managed to miss the sunsets too.
PD_BARBSParticipantGreat set of shots, my vote is for the B&W on the first shot and the colour on the second.
My thoughts
The lack of good light on the first just makes it look more interesting in the B&W.
The Abbey looks abit bright (too much dodge ?) on the B&W on the second shot, but the colour just looks fantastic.
richiehatchMemberWell helloooo…
Didnt expect all these comments to be honest. I think i agree with what most said. For probably
the first time while I was taking the first shot I envisaged it in mono. Very rare for me I tell ye
as its normally just trial and error when converting the RAW files…! The Kylemore Abbey one looks
good when bigger in mono as I did a gaussian blur dreamy effect to it in PS but I agree its
probably suited to colour. I have other versions with sky in them but its bland and just white so
I recomposed and shot without it.
Jenny… yes that place in Autumn would be stunning. I am so surprised that I haven’t seen a shot
of it before. Its an amazing scene..!Thanks again…. comments very much appreciated…!

aoluainParticipantNice set ritchie, i dont think the weather was doing you any favours.
I like the mono for #1 and colour for #2 although the scene in #2
is a bit busy for me, I think its the bench inthe foreground.the last one is really nice too, nice composition but could be a bit
darker in the centre IMOA
PippateeMemberI find these shots quite powerful Richie … and I am going through a bit of a b&w phase at the moment, so I definitely think all of the shots work better in mono…
the first, in particular, is grand indeed…
