First-Time Critique Post – North Coast

CliveMCLParticipant
Hello everyone,
I had heard many times that the best light for photography is before the sun rises and landscapes is something I had not properly tried yet … so this morning I got up at 4.45am and headed out in the drak with my gear.
I was happy enough with my shots, but even happier with my edits. (some purists out there may hate me for it!) My intention was to try some long exposure silky water shots, but most of my good shots came with shorter shutter speeds and after the sun had risen!
Critique would be appreciated.1)

icarusParticipantHi,
Just back from the north coast myself. Great set of shots, not too sure about number 2 not quite sure what i shole be looking at , however number 6 is fabulous. Great shot, well captured. One for the wall, really really like it
johnnymcParticipantHi Clive,
Well done on lovely post of images.
No 1. I like this a lot, I wonder could it be improved with a crop off the top? Nice colours and composition
No 2 This shot IMO is the weakest of the set. The tilt I feel is very unflattering.
No 3 Really like this a lot. Sorry to go on about cropping but could it be improved with a bit off the bottom? I think the horizon might be a small bit crooked also. Really like the colours and rock textures.
No 4 Good image, well composed.
No 6, Lovely capture of energy!! My eye keeps on coming back to the sky thinking that the colour is a bit unnatural.
Well done on your first post, great set of images.
Best regards,
John
bingbongbiddleyParticipantThe sixth one is spectacular! I hope your careful taking shots like this – looks a wee bit dodgy.
The sky is a strange shade of purple in it though. Otherwise there’s not much to criticise.
I don’t usually like tilted landscape shots like your second above but it kind of works here. Kind of.
Good selection.
suspectmonkeyMemberLove the third shot, just something a bit different about it, really stuck out to me. Maybe could do with the shadows lifted slightly though, particularly along the bottom of the frame or a crop as has already been suggested. Not too keen on the processing in No. 2, 4 and 6 but that’s just my personal taste. To be honest I like the 3rd shot so much it distracts my attention from the rest any way ;)
piusno1MemberwirepicParticipantb318ispParticipant#6 for me too, #2 and 3 are fine, unusual shots too. Some of the processing on the others has gone a tad too far – esp. saturations, vignetting,.
ballylig_boyParticipantHi Clive,
My favourite is the one with the waves crashing onto the pier. The angle on pic 2 makes me feel a little funny. There is a purple tinge to the sky on some pictures, is this a filter or have you added this when processing?
I must get up and see a sunrise myself some morning.Brian
BrianParticipantNice shots but the skies look weird in all of them. There seems to be a two tone graduated filter thing going on.
CliveMCLParticipantThanks for the feedback folks. My personal favourite is number three, I love the darkness and msytery to it. I think number 6 is a good shot, but its a bit typical i think. I mean theres got to be hundredss of ‘waves crashing on piers’ photos in the country let alone the world. I guess I felt it was just too predictable which is maybe why I went a bit far with the processing. I must have been trying to make it stand out more. But I do concede, the colour of the sky is not ideal. Here is the ammendment…
hotjohn01Participant3 and 6 for me clive, they’re class !!!
3 is almost apocalyptic looking, haha
