Catching a Jay

I’m lucky enough to have Portumna forest as my back garden and ive had loads of interesting visitors since ive moved in. In May one evening my girlfriend spotted a “funny looking magpie”. I sat and waited for it to return and spotted it bounce around and take off again. I never saw a Jay before so I asked around. Some people said it was a Woodpecker. I laughed. I saw it one more time from the top back window and as it glided into the woods I thought it looked like a P-51 Mustang. A beautiful bird if I’d ever seen one.

Anyway, has anyone managed to photo a Jay.

Here’s a link to the bird.

They are extremely shy birds, I have seen them being chased by
blackbirds even tho the Jay is bigger! They love acorns so if there
are oak trees nearby you will have a better chance.

Check out our own “Book of birds” thread there may be one or two there!

Haven’t managed a jay yet. Set up a feeding station either in the forest or in your garden, to get them comming regularly. Its the only way really, unless you manage a lucky shot.

Why did you laugh when a woodpecker was suggested? There have been recent records of woodpeckers here. MAybe not in Portumna though.

I know its not unheard off but I found it highly unlikely.

Off topic, we had 2 beautiful stoats visit the garden aswell. I hope i get a shot of them next winter or spring.

Unfortunately our cat killed a red squirrel the other day. We even rescued it a week before where it hid in a watering can from the cat. We brought it to the vet and he treated it and released it again. Collar and bell doesn’t seem to be working.
