I see the campaign signs on the poles already… “Germany gets 18% of the EU votes, Ireland .9%” or sumtin like that. Well how can the EU be run with 1000 bosses?
btw… Germany is officially out of recession… Ireland?… maybe 2012.
Oh right… let’s stick with biffo and the rest of the muppets that run this tincy little isle into the muck.
….here come the patriots.

PeteTheBlokeMemberGizzoParticipantI can’t wait for that moment in which we will refere to Europe as something real, and not just a Utopia..
PeteTheBlokeMemberEurope is balls. All it was supposed to be was an area for free trade.
No one sensible can complain about that – personally I believe in free
trade everywhere, not just Europe. But then the politicians wanted more, and more and more. And to pay
for it they wanted tax, and more and more. So then they have money
and they feel they can demand a quid pro quo when they pass it around
and the whole thing turns to bollix. A vicious circle of bureaucracy and
politics instead of free markets operating without constraints. They’ll all be up against the wall when I’m in charge.
justaguyParticipantI really don’t see a reason for a second referendum.
Maybe the next time a referendem comes up the outcome should be “yes and no” so everybody is happy and we don’t have to vote twice. This way you can keep having elections until you got the result you want. Ireland voted no the first time and we should stick with it. Eventhough I voted yes, I would vote no now. If they annoy me I will annoy themBMParticipantBe glad you live in a democracy and have had the chance to vote in a referendum. The UK power-masters decided for us … but then again, Westminster always knew what was better for the poor lost souls of the empire

My understanding was that the concept of “Europe” (as established in the Treaty of Rome)
was to present opportunities for unification acrtoss Europe in the aftermath of 2 wars that
devastated it – socially, economically and politically – the thinking being that if there was
greater ecomomic co-operation/reliance and a more integrated social infrastructure, there’d
be less risk of another big falling out.Of course, that left the door open for a new breed of politician … and opportunities for more political buggering about (that’s a technical political term in the NI Assembly).

Oh its great to live in a democracy. But what good is it to recall a result of a vote simply because its not the result yoou desire. In that case the power masters might aswell decide for us. its the same result in the end. Maybe if they would have rigged the vote the last time it would have been easier. and cheaper
PeteTheBlokeMemberOoops. Looks like this has become a politics thread… and I allowed myself
to be dragged in. Sorry Mark. Does this mean I have to wait even longer
before I become a moderator?NossieParticipantjustaguy wrote:

I agree with this a lot and it has been rattling around in my head for months. The people voted No and No should mean No, even though I voted Yes. So you can argue that it should stand. However they say that the issues that concerned the people have been addressed therefore you’re not exactly voting on the same thing. So ask yourself, if you voted Yes the first time and you have another chance to get it that way am I biting off my nose to spite my face here? The other issue of politicians being allowed to reset the vote again and again until the answer they want comes up is another issue.
The horrible thing that goes on here though is the scare mongering. You have pissy little opposition parties that will do what they can to disrupt and make times hard for the current government so they’ll rally the people to vote No even if it’s not in the better interest of the people and country. Their focus is to damage the government at any cost it seems, and that cost is to us the people. You’ll notice they’ll highlight all of Ireland’s (meagre) sacrifices and none of the gains, they’ll also fail to comment on the huge sacrifices made by larger countries.

Take a number ;0)
JodyParticipantI wonder when the next election comes along and Fine Gael are swamped into govt will Fianna Fail say “You know what, we’re going to have that election again, obviously you didn’t understand the election and next time you should really vote for us”
We stopped living in a democracy the day they decided we’d voted “incorrectly” to Nice
PeteTheBlokeMemberWe binned democracy before that (talking as a Welshman, not a Northern Irishman –
I don’t want to go into that sort of discussion).Just a few things off the top of me head:
The police keep DNA samples from people who weren’t even charged.
They shoot Brazilian plumbers in the head with near-zero reason for suspicion.
Trial without jury is allowed if there’s a reason to think the jury might be nobbled.
Suspects can be held in custody for 28 days without being charged.
You can be jailed just for reading about bomb-making.BMParticipantPeteTheBloke wrote:

You can be jailed just for reading about bomb-making.Yes, we certainly have made the world a better place than before we (this generation) came along …
We’ve done a great job for our kids and can now shuffle off in the absolute confidence that they will be in safe hands …
