Canon or Sigma for EOS 7D
-
Shutter BugMember
So I’m buying a new EOS 7D in 2 or 3 months.
I want to either buy the Canon 18 – 200 / Sigma 18 – 200 / Sigma 18 – 250 / Tamron?
Anyone here any advice?
Of course I lean towards the Canon, but I’ve had two stunning Sigma lenses in the past.
FocusedParticipantI’m no expert in these matters, but usually such a large zoom range isn’t good if you’re looking for good image quality. And I’m assuming you are if you’re going for a 7D!

You are right in saying they’re not great. Although, zoom lenses have come a long way, they’re not as bad as they use to be. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still not a fixed focus L series, but they are great everyday lenses. I still have one or two prime lenses tucked away though.
Xali1971MemberIf it’s an option I’d go with the canon f3.5/5.6 28-300mm USM IS L instead, pricey but brilliant. It’s essentially superglued to my camera since I bought it.
extreme wide range and good (not excellent) performance throughout, built like a tank and weathersealed to boot. on the downside , it weighs as much a tank too , but I like the stability.
Piotr MMemberYou are buying this expensive and demanding camera to use with such a crap lens? You are insane! No offense.
To use the resolution this camera offers you need better lenses. Otherwise you waste your money.
If you are buying it for its stunning movie mode a large aperture lenses are nicer than these slow megazooms.steelydanParticipantHi Jenny
I would have to agree with piotr M at this point. Why spend that amount of money on a good /high spec camera when you spend less money on the one thing that gives you stunning images..The Lens!!!
You can put a Good lens on a crap body and still get high quality images.. I would try to cover all mm on whatever you decide to shoot.
In hindsight ,for me anyway, after buying the “it will do for now” lenses over the years.
I would go forCanon 10-22mm for wide angle
Canon 50mm f1.8 II for portraits
canon 70-200 f4 for wildlifeThe 18-200 lens was made for the photographers that just what to stick one lens on, and do landscapes/wildlife/portraits
But look for reviews of the lens and see the landscape images that were taken, one thing is, long exposures 18mm /Handholding slow shutter speeds etc etc.
Its a 1.6 crop body so your 18mm will actually be around 28mm anyways
What other lenses do you have?? maybe you have most of the 18-200 covered already?
Just my 2cents worth
RogMemberHi,
I’d have to agree with the previous posts. Not much point in going for an 18 mp camera, & sticking a poor lens on it!
You can buy the 7d in kit form, with the Canon 15-85. This lens has got some good reviews, and would effectively be a 24mm-135mm on a crop camera like the 7D. It has IS as well, which gives you about 3 extra stops when handholding while shooting static subjects.24-135 in full frame is an ideal range as a walkabout lens, and would be all you’d need, unless you need super-wide, or a longer lens for sports or wildlife.
A couple of other points:
Basically, the more focal length coverage they try to carm into a lens, the more the image quality suffers.
We’d all love a 14-400 lightweight lens with super image quality, but the laws of physics don’t stretch that far!
That’s why people still use prime lenses, as, pound for pound, they still can’t be beaten when looking for the best quality (and speed).
So, basically it’s a compromise. I’d reckon the 15mm-85mm would offer a good all-round choice. Also, from my experience, I haven’t been too enamoured with any of the Sigma’s I’ve owned.
I’ve found when comparing like with like, Canon are constantly better than Sigma, both in terms of image quality, and build.
Canon lenses aren’t perfect either, but the quality control of Sigma leaves a lot to be desired. So, to sum up I’d advise:
Buy Canon, get the best you can afford, and stay clear of “superzooms”Rog
imaginationParticipantAs a 7D owner who is looking at lenes I too have benefited from the above posts – Thanks folks… :D
