Insurance – what do I need?

  • This year I’ve being doing event photography for an organisation who run a race series (off-road running etc.). To date I’ve been covered under their insurance policy for public liability. I’m now looking to take on a few more events from different organisers but I want to get sorted with my own insurance policy so I can approach them and say I’m fully covered.

Like many photographers I’m sure who start out in this I can take the photos but I’m very much starting out on the business side of things! I’ve done a bit of searching on the forum for advice on insurance but if I could get some more specific advice on what I need to look for I’d really appreciate it.

Currently I’m working from home and travelling to the events which are all at weekends, sometimes 1 day sometimes 2 day. I’m not too worried about having my actual photography equipment covered, it would be a bonus however if I could get that as well. My main concern is being covered incase of an accident, so I’m assuming its Public Liability cover I require? I may also end up with another photographer shooting for me as well, would they need their own seperate cover or can you setup a policy that would cover several photographers working for the same business?

In one of the other threads I came across the company Photo-Shield… is this the type of company I’m looking for and are there any other names out there people could recommend?

Thanks in advance as always, I know somtimes amateurs trying to get themselves into the professional environment can be frowned upon, but I really am putting my full effort in to doing this right from the start and forming a credible business.

    Hi Jon,

The best of luck with your endeavours.

You mentioned having seen Photo Shield mentioned and
they are one of the site sponsors so I’m sure that might
be the place to start for advice.

This is a link to their area of the site: https://www.photographyireland.net/viewforum.php?f=76

    Cheers.

    John.

Get in touch with steve photo sheld (make sure its steve beveridge though) and have a chat with him.
He’ll be willing you give you the advice you need and if he’s able to provide you with insurance
then I know he’ll give you a good deal.

You trying to go professional and go imho need the appropriate level of insurance :)

Thanks for the replies to this thread, given me some useful information to get started with. I have contacted Photo Shield since posting this thread, but unfortunately I phoned them before your post Mark so not actually sure if it was Steve Beveridge I was speaking to! They did give me some good information however. The price did seem to come back a bit higher than some of the other companies I was looking at, however upon doing some further research it seems that Photo Shield offer a much more extensive level of cover, and when you work out the difference per month over 12 months it would certainly be worth it for peace of mind alone.

Sound advice in your last line as well Mark, thanks!

    Hi Jon,

    Steve’s contact details are:

    Direct phone: +44 1775 716690
    Email via photo-shieldwinsoverhowden.com

If you didn’t ring that phone number then you mightn’t have spoken to Steve.
Never know you might get a better deal. Worth emailing him anyhow :)

    Thanks
