Limited editions

Apologies if this question as been posted before but I tried with the search terms and got some silly posts.
Can someone tell me if limited editions of photographs has been regulated. A Gallery which was interested in exhibiting some of my work wanted me to limit the editions. How is this done – who take responsibility for destroying the originals. Who keeps track of how many prints have been made. Do all the prints have to be made at the same time?
the times i have been involved in making limited editions for people there have been two different ways of dealing with them
1. i as the printer have destroyed the the files after the final prints have been made, the other option is that the photographer has done it
2. i or the photographer have kept records of sales and who purchased the editions etc.
3. the prints dont generally have to be made at the same time, i quite often take on editions, where i maybe print 5 or the edition of say 25, then as the client needs more i print them on demand. it does kind of depend on lots of factors
I don’t believe that there are any regulations. Limited editions seem to be defined
by the photographer themselves.So you could set a maximum number of prints for a particular format (20×16) and all the while
be printing and selling them in another format (10×8) for example. Its pretty much wide open
from what I can gather.Also does having a limited edition printing mean you can’t have them published in a book, to me
no, but perhaps it does to some folk.Anyhow, thats just a few thoughts. Oh and I’d be close to destroy the original negative/digital file :)
Indeed, there is no regulation. It’s up to the photographer to decide. Personally, I don’t care for limited editions – it’s an artificial limit. I closed all my limited editions some time ago (even the ones which hadn’t sold out) and now only sell open editions.
Ansel Adams never limited his photographs, and that’s good enough for me!
