Recommend a good camera bag?

legacydanParticipant
So i have outgrown my Lowepro TLZ1, i need something that can easily store my nikon d90 with 70-300 attached plus room for 35mm and 18-105 plus room for flash and some other bits and pieces. What would you guys recommend? Also can you buy better lense cases that give a bit more protection than the soft nikon cases?
randomwayMemberIt depends on how do you use your camera. Do you want a shoulder bag, backpack…
If I was buying now, I would go for a Crumpler 7 Million Dollar Home. They look very practical, and big enough for all the gear you want to carry around. Two zooms, a prime lens, one or two flash units and a pro body or two… they all fit in. I always preferred shoulder bags, you use your cameras much more because it’s easier to take it out and put away.
PixelleMemberAs Randomway says, depends what you want. I have an Orion trekker and Flipside 400 AW. both Lowepro backpacks.
The Orion seems to be discontinued, it has a lower compartment divided in velcro sections for camera gear and an upper compartment with little zip pockets. It holds the D80 with 3/4 lenses and flash. The Flipside has one large compartment with velcro bits. See here for info.

It can take camera, some lenses inc the 50-500 and I can strap the tripod on as well. The AW cover is good, and I can squeeze a rainjacket or other stuff into another compartment.
It’s a comfortable bag to carry, even fully loaded.davekeoghParticipantI have both a lowe pro slingshot, and a Vertex 200 AW. I have to say the Vertex is brilliant when you want to bring alot of gear with you at the same time, generally I have a 70-200mm on my 40d and a random lens on my 400D. It’s good and surdy, but the waist straps annoyed me, they say a stanley blade :D
The slingshot fits the 40D with the 70-200mm barely. I would recommend something bigger, or something alot bigger if you want bring a flash too
legacydanParticipanti like them crumpler shoulder bags alright. I might go for the Crumpler 8 Million Dollar Home, seems to be deep enough to take body with 70-300 on it.
MartinOCParticipantI upgraded to Flipside 400 AW from an Orion Trekker II.
Both are great bags, the Orion for light stuff. It can’t handled mounted long lenses.
I got the Flipside as my back was getting sore with heavy stuff in the Orion.
The Flipside can easy handle long lenses and carries stuff higher on your back.Martin
randomwayMemberJust don’t buy too big a bag, you don’t want to leave it at home because it’s too heavy to carry around.
legacydanParticipantanyone know anywhere in Dublin that stock the crumpler gear? Nothing but Lowepro in most camera shops
randomwayMembergaffoParticipantConns don’t seem to keep much in stock. One thing to bear in mind for Crumpler is that they are smaller than you would think.
I have just bought a messenger boy 550 from Amazon. its small but I wanted something discrete to carry around from day to day. With a bit of playing around I can get the following gear in
D300+MBD10 with 18-70 attached
50 1.8
55-200
sb 600 Flash
memory card holder and some bits and pieces.Would struggle to get bigger lenses in.
One thing about the messenger boy muffin top bags is they don’t have any Velcro on the top for closing just the plastic buckles which is a disadvantage.
if you are looking for something to carry all you gear get the size above what you think that you need. They are quality bags with good design and comfy straps and they are discrete.
randomwayMemberand don;t buy the fancy ones, my friends whole kit was stolen in one of the good looking crumpler bags.
legacydanParticipantso my 8 million dollar home arrived today from US since you cant buy it anywhere else! it should easily fit all my gear plus room for my future purchases. I just got the plain black/grey one so it doesnt stand out too much worked out quite expensive delivery and sales tax though :( should last me forever though :)
Mick451Participantgrif04Participantthe national geographic bags are great, waterproof, canvas looking and a heck load of easy to access space.
