2012…what will you be doing

Based on an comments from the ScArIeSt movie thread what will you be doing in 2012?

I was watching a documentary recently on the phenomenon of the polar flip…where magnetic north and south flip. It can be recorded in Hawaii from the layers of newly formed rock the frequency of this flip and it was seen to happen every 15,000 years, or so. They say it hasn’t happened in 75,000 years but the signs are there that it’s imminent (imminent over 75,000 years could mean in several centuries time). But they say there are pockets on earth where this is already happening as the earths magnetic field weakens. In 2012 we will have the next in the 12 year cycle of increased sun flare activity which does have an effect on our communications and electrical grid as did happen in 2000 (I remember watching the Tour De France in 1988 and the signal was affected by the activity seemingly). So with a weakened electric field and an increase in flare and the planetary alignment do you reckon this could be the time of the flip? Imagine navigation around the world when the needle points south, not north.
On the bright side during heightened sun activity the Aurora Borealis can be seen much further south…so make sure you know how to photograph it.

    Magnetic flip

    mmm, sounds like a Y2K-type opportunity …

I read somewhere that the earth magnectic fielld is flipping all the time, so I wouldn’t think to much of it. Also the 2012 thing has to do with the end of the mayan long count calender and it seems that they made a mistake of about 200 years. so its probably 2212 when we all go.
And the super vulcano underneath yellow stone parc is also 65000 years overdue from erupting. Its clear THE END IS NEAR. quick make a picture of it

Interesting theory Alan. There could be some truth to it.

I remember the 1998 Tour as well. The one that started in Dublin, yes?

I remember also the signal being affected…but I was glad….because Jimmy McGee was in the middle of his usual

commentary…You know how it used to go …”Marco Pantani…the man with the bandana…great cyclist…knew his father

well…Guiseppe Pantani…worked in Islandbridge with CIE for a time…isn’t the Sally Gap lookin’ beauuuutiful at this time of

year…what an ad for Bord Failte…etc etc etc”.

I am planning to move to “North” America, I mean, south, but it will be the northern one…

When I flip my pockets it means I’m broke. Does this mean in 2012 the whole world will be broke?
Flippin’ magnetic fields, Will the birds be flying North or South for winter? :? :D :D

Wouldn’t they be the Aurora Australis then Alan?…

Anyway, at least I’ll be sitting pretty in the knowledge that I will still be able to find my way around, having never worked out the need for Sat Nav in a country that only has about 10 major roads.

Well no…they’d still be the Aurora Borealis as the magnetic field weakens it allows the solar bursts to penetrate further south. And Sat-Nav is based on satellites not the earths magnetic field so you’ll still be guided nicely through car parks and fields on your way to the motorway.

Miki G – It’s been shown that you can feck up a bats homing skills by temporarily destroying its in-built navigation via a magnetic burst. After about 1/2 hour this rectifies itself so no, birds will still fly their normal way…just do a loop during the journey for fun!

There’s no doubt that things have changed here – GC was never this complicated.

    My head hurts.

You see, in the OGC we contemplate philosophical battles. Sometimes while gathering around the Grandfather clock in a smokey environment while sipping Brandy.

    Sometimes everything even makes sense.

If the needle on the compass is north,
    and opposites attract,
then surely the North Pole is the South Pole anyway?

Dunno about the rest of you but in 2011/2012 I will be between Papua New Guinea, South America, and Slovenia. 8)

Probably still trying to avoid the swine flu, and trying not to die due to Ryanair flights

Do the satellites not use some sort of compass orientation in order to maintain their geostationary orbit ?
