Smoke Trails
-
JMac-2006Participant
Yesterday wasn’t a great day weatherwise so spent the day in the house – decided to break the monotony by trying out some abstract art – in the form of smoke trails. Not completely happy with the background could do with being a crisper white but thats for another day.
shutterbugParticipantGreat fun to do these, especially when the weather is rotton! I have tried this myself
and think I spent about four hours messing around……time just flew by :) Love the
first one and agree the background is a little mottled but it doesnt really take away from
it.5faytheParticipantHi Jason,
These look like good fun allright.
Nice patterns too.I don’t smoke but I may have to start. :)
Cheers.
John.
miki gParticipantHi Jason. Tried a few of these too a while back. Good (if not a healthy) way to pass the day away. I found that black backgrounds seem to work better. These are nice though. Nicely lit.
JMac-2006ParticipantThanks for the comments.
Yes an enjoyable hour or so – going to set up again this week and iron out the couple issues. MikiG – funny thing is these were shot with a black background – photoshop is a wonderful thing :)
JMac-2006ParticipantHad another go at this. and left one with a black background see what you think.
slang61ParticipantHi Jason, really like these pics.
Any chance you could explain how you got these shots (set up and photoshop techniques etc).
plan on trying them this weekend.
Many thanks in advance.STU.
miki gParticipantJMac-2006ParticipantHi STU
the smoke trails are really easy to do – use a black background and a candle or inscence stick – you’ll need a flash unit – hit the shutter release and use flash from behind the smoke -if you have remote triggers its easier – i dont so i set a long shutter speed walk behind the smoke and manually fire the flash
in photoshop add an invert layer if you want to make background white and smoke gray/black – then add a hue saturation layer to choose the colour smoke you want
you can get some great results and some duds but its good experimenting on these wintery nights if you have nothing else to photograph
thanks MikiG – i like the black aswell and the diagonal in blue seemed to suit
