Remote flash

Hi everyone.
I want to get into playing with flashs as i really dislike the built in one on my camera (Canon 40D). i don’t really like built in flashes in general as the are so extreme and always tend to flatten images. What i’d love is to get a remote trigger flash (ideally wireless) to have a play with. I have zero knowledge on the topic though. Can anybody recommend any to me that would be a good starting point.
Thanks
Pete
MarkKeymasterPete,
Have you got another flash to use, ie one which you’d wirelessly trigger ?
PeteFlemingMemberHey Mark
No not at the moment, i’d need to get the flash and the triggering mechanism
BallymanParticipantBuy a cheap flash and flash triggers on ebay. You should get the lot for less than €100

Put a white plastic cup in top of your built in flash and you will have a great diffuser.
Any flash will work as long it has manual power control. A PC port will be a bonus but there are ways around that.O
PeteFlemingMemberright on thanks guys.
I think i might just get a few cheapy triggers of ebay to play around with first.
Just have to decide on what flash to go with.
Would i be advised to go with a good one and not waste my time with a cheapy?
Maybe the canon 580 ex?

A good flash is defined by its TTL, meter system..etc. When on manual, all these gadgets do not count at all so at the end of the day ANY FLASH with manual control is good. When I buy a flash I look at 3 things:
1. manual power control
2. how low does it get – in terms of power
3. optical slaveA PC port is a good addition but can live without it.
Despite the fact I have a couple of SB900 the flashes that gets all the hammering are my old SB28. I dont care if I drop them in the water or they fly away with the umbrella (happened a couple of times :) ).
