I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 running Windows XP, we had a power cut today and
now I cant turn it on, goes into normal opening process then the dreaded blue screen
with STOP: 0x00000024 error message, tells you to remove any antivirus but cant get
into it to do anything. Any ideas?nfl-fanParticipantFew things –
1. Press F8 at start-up and try running XP is safe mode
If it still blue screens then you’ll have to dig up your XP install disc that should have came with your laptop. You’ll then be able to try a couple of things –
2. Run a scan disk and repair any errors to your hard-drive
or
3. Run an XP repair
If they all fail… then… gulp.
shutterbugParticipantHow did I know you were going to say that…………cant find the disc :( will try the f8 thing,
it does give four optionsSafe mode
Restore point
Safe mode with command prompt
Safe mode with networkingbut all of them bring you back to the blue screen.
I think its gulp!
Thanks anyway
miki gParticipantHi Jenny. I was using a Dell up to last week until I threw it at the wall  (long story :D ) but I think f2 or f12 work on Dell computers to get you into the BIOS. You may be able to boot it from an alternative source.
BMParticipantWhatever happens, we will be able to get your data off it – don’t worry about that.
Do you have the Windows XP operating system disk – that might have come with the PC? or any recovery disk?
shutterbugParticipantThanks miki, I tried the f2 brought me into diagnostics which took 5 hours to run through,
every thing checked as ok and passed tests, but still no getting past the blue screen. f12 brings
you into an option screen but on selecting any of the options it brings you back to the blue
screen.BM have been searching for the disc, but cant find it, I have a feeling I didnt get one, I found
everything else that came with it but no disc, bar a software one. Thanks for all the suggestions anyway.
miki gParticipantHi Jenny. If you go into the options screen, go to boot options and change it so that your hard drive as the first boot device, that might work. I’ve had that error before and I think that’s how I got out of it. It’s not a total disaster (if I managed to get out of it anyway.  ). It is just that your system cannot recognise the file type. Your data should be safe.
JodyParticipantJenny, you very possibly didn’t get a CD. When you turn on the laptop first, does a blue line flash up for a split second before the Dell screen comes up? If so the reinstall files are stored on the machine, not on a CD.
Is it XP Home or Professional that’s on the machine? I might be able to get a CD and post it to you depending on what it is.
shutterbugParticipantWill give it a go miki thanks! tho not tonight I had a belly full last night :)
It is not my main laptop anymore so I am not overly worried about it, my
daughter is the main user now and the only thing that worries me is that she
will nick mine :) :) if I dont get it going.TinyMemberHi,
I’ve seen that error before..the computer cant read the ntfs file system any more… in my case, . and as in your case it was after a power cut.. the returning power fried the hard disk… everything was lost
if you have a floppy disk dive on the laptop you may be able to repair it
have a read of this article, it my helphttp://geekswhoknow.com/articles/stop-0x00000024-0x0000024-0x24-ntfs-file-sys-error-code.htm
Best of luck

Not sure Jody, I am at work today so wont have time to go back to it till this evening, I will check then and let you know,
thanks. :wink:Niall, thanks for that link, havent time to look till this evening
Thanks for all the replies and help, much appreciated.
miki gParticipantHi Jenny. If you don’t have a floppy drive, I have a USB floppy drive that you can use & some diskettes. You can create a boot disk and recovery disk with these, but you will need another computer running on xp or xp professional (whichever is the same as your computer. I found a Dell diagnostics dvd and a Dell recovery cd, but they were for an Inspiron 9400 running on Vista ultimate, so probably no good to you, you could try them if the floppy didn’t work though.
shutterbugParticipantAhh thanks miki you are a gem, my son has taken over…his friend does this for a living
and will reinstall Windows for me, he has the knowledge and technology (bit like six million dollar man :) )
will lose all data but thats not the end of the world, very old stuff and probably diabolical if I am honest and
I had lots of it backed up to an external hard drive anyway. Thanks everyone for all your help.
