My first Kestrel….

I’ve broken my kestrel virginity with a stroke of luck… Today I was supposed to go on a bird of prey shoot at a falconry but it was called off due to the bad weather. Went for a drive with a friend instead and managed to get this lovely female kestrel…! It was so windy that it eventually got blown from its perch. I got to within 3 meters of it in the car…! Shot about 30 shots that are all almost identical. Couldn’t believe my luck…
Also got this shot of a gull at Clogherhead that I sorta like..!
Both shot with a 5D2 and 300mm f2.8L IS (that i got a lend of….!)Richie
SeaviewParticipantVery nice Richie, you should keep that lens or buy your own.  Well done for getting so close in the car, excellent detail. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one of these in the wild. Nice gull shot also, great timing.
Dave.
miki gParticipantHi Richie. Had a similiar experience yesterday. Walking up the road and walked past a kestrel in a tree, but alas no camera with me. You’ve captured these well. My only point would be the pole is very central and is distracting because of this. If it had been taken in landscape format it would have helped to remove a lot of the pole Well done
richiehatchMemberThanks guys…. yeah was great to finally see one so close up and actually have the camera and correct lens ready for action. The guy I went with always has a 1d3 and 500 f4 in the back of the jeep ready for action. You should see some of the stuff he has ‘stumbled’ across…!!! Here are a couple of horizontal versions. Both are crops but not by much. I’d easily get a 15×10 print out of them..!
Sorry about the sharpening… it aint that bad full size…!
Richie
bingbongbiddleyParticipantNice work. Lucky break.
Pity about the backdrop but you can still be happy with these.
Mark NParticipantNice shot Richie as in my experience these are hard birds to get close to. There used to be one that hunted in the field next door to my house but it flew off every time I pointed the camera at it.
You’ve got a lovely sharp and well exposed subject here.

griangrafParticipantdonalParticipantlovely photos, often tried photographing the local kestrel but never managed to get close enough. i kinda agree with miki g about the pole but would be interested to see it as a print. ( my monitor cant fit the whole image into the screen) could make for an interesting composition as opposed to the usual full frame portraits.
stdanevMemberNice shot
I am striving to get My first Kestrel too.
For last 3 weeks one start coming very close to our house. So I am “hunting” for him.
One day he was 5 meters away from me ,but i was without camera.
I hope, when good weather is back, I will get him.Stoycho
