The difference between 70mm and 85mm…

I have a shoot on Tuesday and I was planning to use my normal 28-70mm L Series lense but I’m tempted to rent out the EF 85 mm f/1.2L USM lense to see what it’s like. My main worry is that my client is looking for very close up shots with about just the face in the frame with a little bit out, and wondered if the difference between the 70mm end of my lense and the 85mm would make much of a difference? I’m guessing with the 70mm I’ll be about 2 feet away from the subject.

2 feet? Is it FX camera like 5D, 1Ds? If so, go for at least 135mm instead. 85mm is not enough. Your client will be upset seeing photos you are going to take. Model’s nose is going to be huge comparing to his/her face. For good shots of face only you have to keep some distance. 85mm is acceptable for aps-c cameras like 50D, 40D or 7D.
85/1.2 is better for portraits than zoom f2.8, if you know how to use it…

    Hi Johnny,

I don’t think you’ll see a significant difference between the two lenses (not enough to justify forking out the “rent” money). I have both lenses that you have mentioned, but when it comes to close up face shots, I normally tend to use the 70-200mm f/2.8L zoom at around 150-180mm.
The 28-70 is great for close up shooting, I can focus at 70mm at an object about 13-14 inches away (i use the 5d). The 85mm f/1.2L however, you need to be almost three feet away (about 33/34 inches) from the subject. It is wonderfully sharp lens though and brilliant in low light.

Good luck with your shoot :)

    Best regards,

    John

Yeah I was thinking the difference wouldn’t be much, so I’m just going to stick to the 70mm end of the lense. I know what I’ll get anyway using that and will be good enough for the job! :)

Also I’m just going to shoot f.10/11 and just crop in post pro.

Why not get the 85mm 1.8? It’s much faster focusing than the 1.2 nevermind it only costs something like 300 quid. Canon’s best bargain lens….one of the best lenses period!
