Camera Settings

I have a Canon 40D if I set Apperture mode do shutter speed and ISO set automatically,if I set ISO do other two set automatically etc.
Or do I have to do each individually.Im starting to mess about with settings and its alot more fun.5faytheParticipantHi Eric,
When your 40D is set to Aperture priority the camera sets the shutter speed depending
on what aperture (f number) and ISO you set.Normally you would set the ISO to lowest possible setting (100) unless you needed to get
a photograph in low light. The aperture (f number) you set would really depend on the type of photograph you are
taking.
With landscapes you would normally be trying to have the maximum depth of field so you
would generally be setting an f number in the f8 – f22 range.
Sometimes with photographs such as portraits you might want to blur the background so
you might set the aperture in the f2 – f5.6 range depending on your lens. These are only suggested settings because as you learn you will use your settings to achieve
the final image you are looking for. When you have set your desired F number and ISO keep an eye on the shutter speed the camera
chooses especially if you are handholding the camera.
If the camera sets a very slow shutter speed you may get blur caused by the camera moving while
the shutter is open.
If the shutter speed is too slow adjust the ISO or f number until you get an acceptable shutter speed. You will get used to making these changes quickly as you get more experience.
I hope this is helpful.
If you need more help just ask.Good luck.

martinkingphotosParticipantI agree with what John has said above and also just to add that another reason
for changing your aperture is to help achieve a faster or slower shutter speed.
f2 will give faster than f8 will give faster than f22 etc.
So the lower the f number the faster the shutter speed you can get.
This can be useful say in Sports where your concern is the player or whatever
in the shot. You can go with f2.8, get a nice fast shutter speed it will also have
the added benefit of blurring out the background which can help de-clutter a
sports shot.
Hope this helps and have fun trying it out.
Martin.kanazawaParticipantThanks for that fellas some good advice there. Is it best to set your apperture i.e if im taking a picture of a motorbike (i go roadracing) I will use a low apperture this will focus on the action rather than the scenery around ?

There is no hard and fast rule here – In my own case I often shoot sports in Tv (shutter speed) mode rather than Av mode. But this would
be on the basis that I get some test shots, they will tell me what shutter speeds I can hope to achieve and I go from there. What you need
to understand is that a low f number e.g. f/2.8 will give you a fast shutter speed. The reverse is also true – if you are in Tv mode and select
a fast shutter speed the camera will set a low f number. It will all come with practice and experience. The main thing is to go out and
try different things and learn from them and persist with it.
Martin.davedunneParticipantOne thing about the 40D is that it also has an “Auto ISO” setting. If you use Av mode + Auto ISO, then the ISO will change between 400 and 800 to avoid camera shake. If there is a possibility of over exposure at 400, then it can go down to 100.
If you use Tv mode + Auto ISO, then it will normally use ISO set at 400 but can swing between 100 and 800 depending on the lighting conditions.
There is a section in the manual that explains how Auto ISO works in each of the camera modes.
