could be the wrong forum but i was wondering if anyone could recommend any good portrait photographers who work outside the studio. i have a shoot on saturday and wanted to see if i could get any ideas as i havent done a whole lot of stuff like this before. its a family shoot ive been asked to do. i have a few of my own ideas but just wanted to see how other photographers approached this before.

Donal, it absolutely depends on the location you’re bringing them to.

I bring families to a few locations near where I live. When I started doing it first, I just worked with what was around me. Trees, walls of building, fences… whatever is there. When you’re there with them, let your imagination run.

To kickstart it, why not search for “Outdoor Family Portraits” on flickr or google images to see what you get?

also look at wedding photography, lots of outdoor groups here. :)

    Generally..

    Do:

Get good expressions, ask them to think about good things, their best Christmas, or holiday etc.

    Don’t:

Make them look at the sun, use an off-camera flash through a brollie as main light and any sun (you never know) as backlight.

    Have fun
