Couple of strobist shots

Had a play around with flashes the other night at the Camera club….
Based on a lighting diagram pw_barb found we set to work…..
First one failed as one of the flashes decided not to fire but I quite like the outcome regardless…
Second one is much nearer the mark …
Good fun playing around with all the flashes and make shift snoots etc….
jb7ParticipantInteresting how the second light seems to smooth out the creases-
the sheet looks much smoother too…Positioning the lights is one thing, but then the sitter also needs to be positioned-
I think they might have needed to turn into the light a bit more-I know you mentioned you were trying these out,
and it’s interesting to see the effect of the lights on the background and periphery-
it shows where the light begins to fade out,
and might provide some clues for how to frame the shot-
the light works well for head and shoulders-A little more distance between the sitter and the background, and maybe shooting wider open might have made it less detailed-
and sometimes a background needs as as much setting up as the lights…Looks like you enjoyed your time under the spotlght anyway,
good to see these- any more from the day?PeteWMemberThanks jb,
These were the pick of the bunch if I’m honest. This was the first time many of us had played with multiple flash setups so was a learning curve for us all. That’s why we went with a predefined setup found on another forum.
The backdrop was found in a cupboard and worked better than the whiteboard that was on the wall in the first place. However, it wasn’t really big enough and as a consequence the edge crept into shot by the feet if the subject was moved away from the wall any further :(
Like you say it was good fun alright, and am looking forward to the next crack at this.
A couple more from the night –
the setup –
Before that I was trying with just two flashes through umbrellas with our very own stdanev as model….
And before that, just the one flash from the left….

Great lighting. Pity about the models though.

Funny that Mark would say that  I was just thinking how the shot of the stool & backdrop actually looked like an interesting shot as it is. It holds a sort of “What was happening here?” sort of mysterious feeling to it. A slight crop to remove the flash & edge of backdrop would help though
