I’m a Photographer, Not a Terrorist!
-
davedunneParticipant
Just wondering about your thoughts on the recent press about police clamping down on photography in London? Some of the reports has been related to high profile photographers including a journalist for the BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/8384972.stm and a photojournalist working a wedding http://www.bindmans.com/index.php?id=672.
The I’m a Photographer, Not a Terrorist! organization are planning a gathering in London in January.
http://photographernotaterrorist.org/Apparently, the police measures are also targeting people who “case out” buildings with water colours. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/dec/18/antiterrorism-police-stop-painter-airport
It’s not so bad here in the USA yet luckily although there have been some high profile cases here too.
Alan RossiterParticipantI have photographic memory…should I implode???
This lark was humerous but now it’s getting annoying. Stopping a water colourist (is that right terminology?)?
Please…spare me!

or somebody with a stupidly big camera-
Although, on the plus side, at least you can show them the picture on the back-
I was photographing with some friends at a rave under South Bank Pier recently,
and they were using point and shoot film cameras-
The police were really put out to be told you couldn’t see the pictures on the back,
it made them really suspicious.Withholding information, interfering with a policeman in the course of his duty-
you could hear the cogs whirring…However, seeing their public buildings upside down could lead to them thinking there’s an even more serious offence being committed.
Maybe there’s a top secret training camp in the desert somewhere
where al-kyeeda go to learn large format…Alan RossiterParticipantAlan RossiterParticipantBMParticipantrandomwayMemberI should make a T-shirt with the text: “I’m a terrorist, not a photographer”. It would sell like hot cakes.
Mick451ParticipantWillemMemberThis makes me so angry. What’s the exposure time on a watercolour? What happens if he decides to bracket? It’d take weeks!
If you wanted to do a recon of any site you could get 90% of the imagery from google earth inclusind measurements and GPS co-ordinates, or even Flickr.

-There is no restriction on taking photographs in a public place
-You are allowed to photgraph police officers if you want to
-Taking a photo is not sufficient reason to stop someoneIt’s a bit over the top really, and another excuse not to put limited resources of officers into preventing crime. I can’t wait til I’m next in London, I’m going to be even more enthiusiastic about taking photos!
WillemMemberFintanParticipantto say I am interested would put it mildly, I am considering going to the gathering on the 23rd January.
i can see this starting to happen here unfortunatly
studio27Memberi’m afraid that we’ll see more an more of this ”terrorist act” bulls**t. it seems that any uneducated official can invoke the ”terrorist act” whenever the people he/she’s harassing seem to know their rights. when will it stop?
miki gParticipantHassleblad or Taliban? Canon or Cannon? I think the security forces are just confused, frightened, poor souls. As Alan Irishwonkafan said about having photographic memory, the terrorist wouldn’t need to take photos of his target, paint it or even make a sculpture of it. I’d be more concerned with the guy having chemicals in his apartment, but then again, he might be only working in his darkroom.
On the subject of the guy trying to set the plane on fire or blow it up last week, I had only discussed how I would use that method (but a bit more refined) a few days earlier to a friend and was saying how easy it would be to do.
