Manual lenses

Bought myself a manual Nikon 28.mm 2.8 AIS E on ebay which arrived yesterday.
I wWanted a prime lens for the Nikon D7100 which I could use for street photography. Reason for using the D7100 (instead of leica) was due to the fact that I wouldn’t have to develop and scan photos in order to get feedback on any photos taken during the David Gibson workshop in Oct.
Anyhow, I can’t believe how easy it was to use with the dslr and the sharpness of the lens is something else.
All for €85 inc p+p from Germany! Highly recommend trying manual lenses !.SeaviewParticipantWill we have to wait until after the Oct workshop to see the stunning images produced from this combination. :D
Dave.
MarkKeymasterIsabellaParticipanthmm, I’ve not ever tried the manual lens on digital combo.
do you find that the focusing slows you down in those need for speedy moments? I tend to associate manual lenses with the sedate processes of LF…
miki gParticipantMy Canon mp-e 65mm (macro) and my Canon 17mm ts-e are both fully manual & are my favourite lenses. They are definitely slower to use, but it makes you think about your settings / composition etc more, which can only be a good thing.
MarkKeymasterWell I’ve been used to manual lenses (35+50mm) with the Leica and tend to prefocus (hyperfocal focus – dof indicator) so that I don’t have to keep adjusting as much. For street type photography this works quite well tbh.
High quality lenses for relatively small money. I’m hooked :)
IsabellaParticipantsounds good! I’ve been pondering the idea of getting a nice wide prime for the digital… perhaps a good old manual is the way to go!
thanks for the heads up!BallistiXParticipantMark, in one of Jean Michel Berts tuts, he states he uses a cheap old 35mm AIS manual lens on his D800 for his masterpieces. So congrats for not buying into all the marketing hype of the latest and greatest is always best.
MarkKeymasterThanks :) I think its a great way to go. If was good enough for pro’s way back then it should (for the most part) be fine today also.
fguihenParticipantGood to hear its producing good results on a DSLR. I never tried it on the DSLR, but on the x100 i almost never auto focus. F8.0, set focus to 2.5- 3 meters in front of the lens and that covers almost everything i need for street photography. Camera doesnt have to spend a half second searching for focus so taking an image is that much quicker, which makes all the difference in street photography.
I got that number from trial and error but this table gives more accurate distances & focus zones for Fstops near and at hyperfocal distances:
MarkKeymasterGood post Fintan with the chart, thanks!. Yes manual is the only way to go for Street I think, as you say you can’t be waiting around for it to autofocus.
I need to practice today/tomorrow with the lens as the street workshop is this Sat/Sun, gulp :)
