I moved to Ireland a year ago and is time to upgrade my PC. I have looked at DELL online , are there any other places online or in Ireland where I can configure a robust PC for my digital workflow..

    Any recommendations…?

I got an Acer last year from laptopsdirect online and it’s brilliant. Price was good too. My girlfriend has a Dell and it’s horrid, plus it now has a battery fault…

My Acer will need a parachute soon, as I’ll chuck it out the window. It’s the worst machine I’ve ever had. I would recommend Dell anyday or Sony or HP.

looking for a recommendation based on the maker is useless, I’ve had fantastic dell, HP and Sony as well as apple and a friend who builds his own machines that constantly make what i buy look like crap, look for something with a spec that will suit your needs, for photography get something that will suit your editing software in terms of processor and RAM and a decent sized hard drive then buy a couple of of externals hard drives also.

PS, get decent monitor(s) or something to calibrate them (it)

    Hi there,
Some of the newer Sony machines are coming with Lightroom or PS Element pre-installed. This may
be a factor for you ?

well what im getting next is a machine geared
to gaming, lots of processing power [quad core]
and lots of ram, no less than 4 gb’s !

I tried building my own a few years ago but couldnt
get it to boot up! sent it back to get tested and the ram
was faulty!! opted for me monies back.

    would chance it again!

I always built my computers for myself. Bought a laptop once and always hated that it didn’t have the graphics card and ram that it should have had. Dabs.ie and Komplett.ie has everything you need for a fast pc, you just have to piece it together. If you read a few threads on a forum like tomshardware.co.uk, you can figure it all out. You need to be able to fit the pieces together though, some diy skills come in handy there.

Branded pc’s only mean that you can’t touch it, can’t fix anything or add anything without loosing the warranty for the whole system. A total robbery in my opinion.

If you don’t want the hassle, you can order a pre-built machine from overclockers.co.uk or the such.

And don’t forget to spend a lot on the monitor, if you want to enjoy your photos in the end.

Hi. Buy a Desktop – and not a laptop. Laptops are for Guinness reps.

Buy DELL – and buy on-line.

Look at systems for small & medium businesses on the front page (Vostro 430)

Get Windows 7 Professional 32 bit only. The professional edition has an ‘XP compatability mode’ for older software to work correctly. The home edition does not. 64 bit version software is limited. I am now using it – and i LOVE it. Vista was junk – Win 7 is great.

Get 1 year warranty only (not 3). If it is going to fail – it will in the first year. If it fails after that – upgrade the warranty, then call a week later explaining the problem. Most desktop parts that may fail are cheap to replace anyway. (Ram, video card etc).

4MB RAM max ( windows 32bit can’t use any more) so don’t buy anymore.

Upgrade the graphics card if you can afford to….but it may be cheaper to get the same card brand new on eBay cheaper than what dell are selling it. A 256MB will be fine. Ati or nVidia are pretty equal.

Don’t ‘add’ anything else ( Security, Office etc etc)

Get a 19″ LCD min. 15″ and 17″ no good.

This will cost around the €750 mark today.

    Hope it helps.

I’m currently looking at buying a laptop for photography (I need a laptop for processing on-site). I already have a high powered desktop.

I plan to go for Win 7 (64-bit). Most Adobe applications (Photoshop, Lightroom, etc) all come in 64bit and can take advantage of large memory machines (4GB, etc).

What you want – a good processor, plenty of memory (as much as you can), and plenty of disk space. A good video card is also key.

That explains where I’ve been going wrong – I thought that I was a management consultant.

Now, who wants to buy some Guinness?

Oops – forgot to say they are useful for On-Course Bookmakers too!

scan.co.uk have a good website. You can get them to build a bespoke pc or you can build it yourself for cheaper again. They are pretty cheap. You can pick from any processor, any graphics card etc. It just means you have to do a bit of research to get the best parts for your budget rather than just getting an off the shelf computer.

I didn’t think Scan delivered to Ireland, thought they were only mainland UK last time I checked… can’t find anything on, an albeit cursory, look over their website. Does anyone know if they’ve changed recently and started shipping to Ireland ?

If not then, as already noted, dabs.ie and komplett.ie are your best bet.

Thoroughly recommend self building too, goes a long way to help understanding how it all works too…
