Filter falling apart in the cold

Hi all,
I’ve got a problem with my UV filter, it’s a 62mm KEEP filter. The problem is that in the cold, the front metal ring holding in the filter shrinks and unscrews and the glass filter piece falls out of its housing. It fell onto asphalt and it’s really badly scratched now and I’ve to get it replaced.
Has anyone else encountered this problem or have a solution for it? I’ve tried searching high and low on the internet and this forum, perhaps I don’t know the terminology, but I can’t find anything remotely similar..
Thank you very much in advance for any advice!
MartinParticipantHave used filters for years in all sorts of temps and have not had a problem like this.
Could be just a fault with your particular sample of the filter or else maybe its just keep filters are not of a very good quality but I have never heard of keep filters so I cant say for sure…
I have always used Hoya, B&W and Heliopan more recently. Find these screw in filters to be great. The B&W and Heliopan are possibly the best but also the most expensive. They are made from brass which makes them easier to unscrew
Hoya’s are cheap, would recommend getting one of these maybe as a replacement…

The ChairmanMemberAye, I didn’t think it should be a problem with decent filters, this one cost about 30ish…
Can’t really stretch to a B+W, but I’ll be getting a Sigma/Hoya filter next. Glad to hear that the more well-known brands don’t suffer from this problem, it really annoyed me having to wipe it off and screw it back in every few hundred metres.
Thanks for the help!
miki gParticipantI had a similiar problem with binoculars some time ago. Aparently, the company making them were using a “memory metal” on the lens holding rings, which tried to go back to it’s original shape at a certain temperature. Both front lenses became loose at the same time. I can’t remember the name of the company, but all the stock had to be recalled because of this. They were based in Taiwan.
Rusty TromboneMemberHi,
Hope this is not to late a reply, I had a similar issue with a filter on one of my lens, I got around it by using plumbers tape also known as PTFE, this is a white tape that is used to seal brass joints in plumbing, it also has an advantage of making the male and female screw fit a little tighter, one tip though, if you are going to use it is to remember to wrap the tape on the opposite way to the threads.Hope this helps you.
The ChairmanMemberHi Rusty, I was thinking of using the plumber tape before, but the filter was scratched beyond repair, so I ended up getting a Hoya one, and have used it in even colder weather with no problems, but thanks very much!
