Hi Canon Users,
Last month my canon 40d the power just died, checked the battery they are ok, remove all the cards, put it back again still no power on my camera. Called Canon they reckon they need to replace something and it will cost around 300€
My camera is about 3 years old, I guess my warantty run out
Has anyone has this problem ?
Thanks . . .
BMParticipantSeems like a fairly serious fault for a not-old camera.
How many pictures has it taken? If low, then you could push for some good will from Canon.
macoParticipantI know, but realy no choice but have to fix it.
Before that happened, I remembered that everytime I attached the joby gorrilla pod the power went off that might be the caused of it.

That’s interesting. The pod screws into the tripod socket which is not (or should not be) connected in any way to the workings of the camera. So it looks to me like there is some serious internal malfunction (electric shorting?) in contact with the metal of the tripod socket. Or a second idea, are the contacts for the battery bad (or the camera door not fitting well), and putting something into the tripod socket just gives the camera a jolt. This second idea could be tested perhaps by shaking the camera when the power is on (and nothing in the tripod socket), and see if you lose power
I have never heard of anything like this happening (I have a 40D as well). Assuming you have never dropped the camera or had any other major incident with it, I would think you could make a case to Canon that there was something faulty with your camera (even if out of warranty), since I cannot see how that could occur through normal wear and tear.
Can you bring it back to wherever you bought it? If they are any good, I would have thought it would be in there interest to help you argue a case to Canon.
macoParticipantHi,
That what I thought it might be caused by electric shorting, if you look at the the tripod socket theres a metal on it. Cannot try the second suggestion you made as I dont have any power anymore.
No i did not dropped the camera, it just died . . .I have only 1 year warranty, just busy at the moment need to bring it back to canon authorised dealer.
Thanks . . .
macoParticipantUpdate . . . .
Finally manage to let the canon dealers have a look at my camera and it will cost me €214 + vat  to fix it . .
I guess I don’t have the choice but to pay for it . . .
brendancullenParticipantHi. If it’s under the standard 1 year warranty then you should be covered. I recently had an issue with an external ‘Maxtor hard drive’ – 15 months old. ARGOS replaced it for me when i mentioned this new even though 12 months had passed. (that all consumer goods now come with a 2 year warranty from the retailer)

I’m not sure wheter Ireland signed up for this directive …and its been pretty hard getting solid information. My pal owns a chemist and he believes its now Irish law. Perhaps check with the ‘Consumer Assoc. of Ireland’. I emailed them 3 weeks ago and have still not got a reply??
hope this may save you €214 & VAT.
ciao

They need to replace Main PCB Board, i just hope it will enhaced more the quality of my picture.
I still think it was my gorilla pod caused it.
